To start with gas station air pumps are notoriously inaccurate.
Tire pressure should be checked and adjusted on a completely cold tire.
Why would you set your pressure to 40 instead of what the label on the drivers door post lists?
And to mention the cheapest tire gauge is probably better than a SLIME air pressure gauge.

LMAO the cheap tire gauge did match the reading from the TPS

"Tire pressure should be checked cold tire." And the best way to do that, Ford Pass .

So a pretty accurate way to figure out your actual MPG. When you pull in to the gas station note how many miles you got on that tank. Then after you fill up take that number and divided it by the amount of gallons you just put in your tank. I.E. you traveled 227 miles, then topped off with 13.589 gallons. 227/13.589 = 16.704MPG.
Good old pencil to paper! LOL

What do you mean "supposedly" you inflated them to 40 psi?
Did you use a reliable handheld digital or analog tire pressure gauge?
Why did you set them to such a high pressure?
If you have the original TPMS sensors they are 6 years old and are entering the end of life window for their batteries.
First of all...I DIDNT say I SUPPOSEDLY inflated them to 40... I said PURPOSELY inflated the tires to 40.
I used an analog gauge. I inflated them to 40 JUST to see if the TPMS would also indicate that tire pressure...which it didnt. Lastly...I did not know that TPMS's have batteries...SO...thanks for that info. I will have to remember that when I take it in for the first oil change and tire rotate at the shop! Thanks!

Find a good digital. Just make sure the battery is fresh.

On my car...
Tpms reads low by a few lbs.

Mpg reads high by about 1mpg.

When I get a new car it's standard practice for me to manually figure MPG over several tanks and compare it to what the car's computer says. The car is almost always a mile or two higher than what's real.

Hand calculation is really just another estimate of mpg. Unless you are measuring how much gas you actually burned and replacing exactly that same amount, you are still only doing an estimate. Difference in temperature, flow rate on the pump, how high you fill the tank and fill pipe, or any back pressure is going to affect how much gas you put in the tank and affect your calculation as a result.

Very true. Sometimes you might fill the tank till it almost runs out and the next you might cheat yourself by a gallon or a half. Good point!!

That's why I do it for several tanks in a row, sometimes for three or 4 months. It takes all the variables and averages them out.
Will it ever be perfectly accurate? No, but it is a good solid average.
