What really sickened me when I read it was the statistics on teen and preteen suicide rates in comparison to social media popularity. It also sickens me to hear my nearly 50 year old step mother talk about a tick tock video she saw. Social media is toxic to society.

I had a MySpace for a couple months because all the other kids in high school had one. Didn’t use it, didn’t know why it existed, I had all my friends numbers and knew where they lived… Hell, I didn’t live in a house with internet service until 2014 or 15 when a buddy moved in and gave me his WiFi password. I don’t use anything other than forums, other than here I’m on firearms talk forum, oilburners.net (6.9 and 7.3 idi diesels), and an rc crawler forum.

Nah, even us older than you, that tried Say myspace or Facebook,etc. learned quick it was toxic And a bad Idea to post on, Once employers wanted to see your online media, it was proven we were right.
As far as youth taking themselves out, that has always been a big problem, but Again media social or news have so many more outlets that you hear about it more, Were as before when there wasn't social media and only a few news broadcast, you only heard about local things like that if even those. It was a big issue back then also. But news broadcast have to follow rules about under age kids and what they can report, social media any yahoo can post about a kid ending themselves, were a news broadcast can't name them or where.

China didn't parent these kids that don't think twice before doing these things and video recording them doing it.
That is all on the parents, lack of teaching right and wrong and giving them a moral compass.
Yes kids will be kids , I remember the mayham I caused, but nothing like this level of stupid.

The reality is that life has just been far too easy for a few decades now. People have become coddled by society. On top of that, it's really hard to differentiate yourself now from a crowd and really "stand out", so we get this bizarre culture of trying to be the most outrageous and the most viral. That and championing "causes" and trying to solve "problems" that are affecting noone.

Difference is with today's technology their mayhem has world-wide reach easily instead being locally confined.
That is where I see our society not having done enough yet to get control over the power of social media that it has right now but should not have anymore, by creating adequate laws and improve education of our children to properly use the power of this worldwide connected and technological age in respectful and reasonable manner without abuse, exploitation or disrespectful exposition.

So apps originating in other countries (or not, does not matter where from) having such a huge influence and power is a sign something must be done about it to maintain social values without improperly affecting their use and intention.
They have to comply with the values the society chooses to live by and the constitutional frame of the country, not the other way round where society constantly becomes the slave of more and more powerful technological tools in the future.
