The handling package car seems to have valves... but they're not visible anymore. The pipes have a down bend, but you can see a 'band' on the inner pipe, which I believe to be a valve. One of the guys there need to confirm that.

On a separate note, I really like the ratios of my MT-82 D4. But now I'm curious which are the ratios of the 3160 that will be in the Mach1. Does anybody have both, to compare them side to side? Thx.
Ask and you shall receive:

MT82-D4
1st - 3.24
2nd - 2.10
3rd - 1.42
4th - 1.00
5th - 0.81
6th - 0.62

TR-3160 (GT350 Spec)
1st - 3.25
2nd - 2.23
3rd - 1.61
4th - 1.24
5th - 1.00
6th - 0.63

So what does this mean? Well, double overdrive vs single, for starters. Effectively, this means we can use 1 more gear on a road course or any other situation when accelerating as fast as possible, up to and including the top speed. The governed top speed of any 5.0 Mustang equipped with the MT82-D4 is reached in 4th gear...where as the TR-3160 will reach it in 5th. This will increase the maximum acceleration and wheel torque values in nearly every gear (1st and 6th are basically the same).

1st and 6th gear are very close between the two transmissions, but it's what is sandwiched in between that counts. The TR-3160 makes more wheel torque in EVERY gear, but substantially more in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gear compared to the MT82-D4...which equals better acceleration and tighter spacing, which results in less RPM drop-off between each gear shift. This will keep the engine in it's powerband more effectively. Plus, more shifting = more fun! Especially with that mint TR-3160.

Here is what all that means with some numbers. I'll use speed for reference:

MT82-D4
1st - 48.2 mph
2nd - 74.3 mph - 4900 rpm
3rd - 109.9 mph - 5100 rpm
4th - 156.0 mph - 5300 rpm
5th - 192.6 mph - 6100 rpm
6th - 251.7 mph - 5700 rpm

TR-3160
1st - 48.0 mph
2nd - 70.0 mph - 5200 rpm
3rd - 96.9 mph - 5400 rpm
4th - 125.8 mph - 5800 rpm
5th - 156.0 mph - 6100 rpm
6th - 247.7 mph - 4700 rpm

(All of these values are taken with a 255/40/19 sized tire (roughly 27"), a 3.73 rear end gear and a maximum engine speed of 7500 rpm).

The speed and rpm will differ VERY slightly due to a number of variables. This gives us the closest representation as we can expect in the real world.

The mph number is the maximum speed that can be reached in each gear at 7500 rpm. The number next to it (starting in 2nd gear) is the rpm you will be starting that gear in. So, if you were shifting at redline in 1st with both transmissions, you will be in 2nd gear at 4900 rpm in the MT82-D4 and 5200 rpm in the TR-3160. This just backs up what I was explaining in the previous section. The TR-3160 provides better spacing for acceleration and will more effectively keep the 5.0 in it's powerband.

Also, for those who care about straight-line performance, you can see that the 0-60 and 1/4 mile runs, each use the same amount of shifts. 1 shift for the 0-60 and 3 shifts for the 1/4 mile. However, since the gears are spaced closer in the TR-3160, it will undoubtedly cut a better 0-60 and 1/4 mile time, providing it has the traction to put the power down. The 1/4 mile in particular should show a big improvement due to the gearing...both with ET and mph.

As for cruising speeds:

MT82-D4

65 mph @ 1925 rpm
70 mph @ 2075 rpm
75 mph @ 2225 rpm

TR-3160

65 mph @ 1975 rpm
70 mph @ 2125 rpm
75 mph @ 2275 rpm

So close you could call it a wash.

TLDR: The TR-3160 will out accelerate, return virtually the same highway mileage AND MOST IMPORTANTLY be more fun to drive (more shifts, better shifts) compared to its MT82-D4 counterpart.

Great video from Evan Smith with Jim Owens.....

So I'm still a little confused on the appearance package after watching the video. Does anyone know, can you get the Jet fighter grey color combo with orange stripping and brembos in a non-handling package Mach 1?

I recall he said that they were separate packages. I sure hope so for those who want JFG w/o the handling package.

yes. color is an attribute of the APPEARANCE package. What's interesting about JFG is one, it ain't the correct color, but two, the color is intended to wash out when looking at jet against the sky or clouds. So does this mean Ford expects people to see Mach1s go by on their roofs?

I believe you can, yes. The only stipulation is that the Appearance Package is ONLY available with Fighter Jet Grey. It just happened that this particular FJG also had the Handling Package.

It's a shame the only way to get the seat stripe (orange) is to get the Appearance Package. It'd be nice if non-appearance package cars could perhaps have a white stripe in the seats, like the '03/'04

They don't say explicitly whether it will or will not be.

From the Ford Press Release News site:
https://media.ford.com/content/ford...s-pinnacle-of-mustang-5-0-liter-v8-style.html

"Satin Black side and hood stripes are included with reflective accent stripes in any of three colors: Red, White and Orange (Appearance Package only).
Exterior color options include the Mach 1 exclusive Fighter Jet Gray (Appearance Package only), as well as Iconic Silver, Shadow Black, Oxford White, Velocity Blue, Twister Orange, Race Red and Grabber Yellow."

^In terms of the colours and stripes, that's all that's said about what will be offered.

I'm probably in the minority, but I'm not a fan of the orange exterior striping and calipers of the Appearance Package. Just not a fan of orange, really.

No JFG for you!

Oh well, I'd like to see a pic of an Iconic Silver base car with the red accented stripes.....

I think the Mach 1 with the handling package will be quite a competitive car, and I'm liking the looks of it more and more. It's a more developed package that was tweaked and fine-tuned over the Bullitt and PPL2 Mustangs, obviously. It's more engineered than most are giving it credit for, gained from previous models.
The PPL2 was fairly close to a base GT350 (minus the cooling problems) in performance, so the Mach 1 should lay down some impressive numbers on the track and be great fun to drive!

I'm looking forward to learning more about the reworked 10 speed automatic and the new torque converter. Getting the 10 speed to shift quicker manually would be an awesome improvement. Love the one I have I'm just saying we always want better stuff. Definitely looking at buying one. Does anyone know when they're going to open the order Banks?

That is the color I’m interested in with the red accent stripes and red calipers.

Take a look at the 69 Mach 1. They emulate the lights from that car. They do seem a little off with today's headlights but once you put real lights in there I think it is going to look great.

I don't know if anyone caught it, but you can definitely get the handling package with the 10 speed auto based on that video that was posted.

people speaking extemporaneously makes all kinds of mistakes in what they're saying. Until it's in print it means nothing.
