I wonder why Ford made the "R"s back tire 1 inch shorter that the non "R" do you think for track?

Are you sure you have that backwards. My GT350 order says it has the 305's.

Sidewall is smaller on the front and rear tires of the GT350R vs the GT350. This increases the turn in response, affects handling characteristics, damping coefficients etc. So the GT350R was developed with those tires in mind. I doubt the whole reason was to increase the torque at the rear wheels.

^Depends. The old school will tend to think the lower profiles tires are a negative for handling characteristics.

Although current tire tech shows lower profile and better radial design to improve the above. And provide a more linear predictable window to the point of failure/grip.

As evident in formula racing now considering lower profile tires... For these reasons and even to allow for better bigger brakes.

All of which is debatable.

The ratios being effected....is a given.

Agreed. The stock GT350 tire is also very tall at almost 27.5", so to go wider and keep the same aspect ratio the tire would get even taller. So that is more unsprung/rotating mass further from where it needs to be.

Ford doesn't make the tire, Michelin does. In the Cup 2 in 19" in 315 width, 30 series is the tallest available available.

This has just about everything to do with it, and also keeping it reasonable for normal roads. With a street tire the compromises are made for DOT compliance, NVH, warranty B.S. where as a racing tire could be built specific to a single track for a specific car and riding dynamics. They could build a Hoosier racing tire with a higher and firmer sidewall but you wouldn't want to street drive them even though some of us do occasionally!
