I was down in Gatlinburg with the family this past weekend in the Fusion. Didn't get too much spirited driving in as it was bumper to bumper everywhere. I have never been to the actual Tail or know where it is but I figure I was pretty close to it. Autumn leaves make the roads pretty enjoyable to drive down but I'm guessing from the traffic I saw Autumn is a crazy busy time for the area. So any locals to the area want to share the best time to come down with the Mustang and drive around with traffic free roads?

Monday through Thursday is definitely less crowded. Also during leaf change there is going to be more traffic as well. I would recommend hitting the Cherohala Skyway while you're there and possibly even the Devils Triangle (Hwy 116) if you're going to be in town awhile or get over here early enough.

Would a weekday trip in May be a good time?

Yes definitely! Like I said the roads around the dragon are great too so make sure you hit those up as well!

I echo the "during the week" comments and that the Cherohala Skyway is a must. Frankly I like the CS more than the Dragon but you have to do the Dragon.

Remember to be kind to those behind you - plenty of pull offs to let someone go past if they are on you. I wish everyone would return the favor though...

If you guys decide to go hit me up. I live 45 min from there and can show you some much better roads than the Dragon.

I actually liked the cherohala skyway better. I prefered the longer sweeping curves.

I will also say that going at night is a much better experience than during the day if you have experience up there.

night runs will pucker that ass right up :) Of course, recommended for slow speeds unless a dragon-veteran :headbang:
