I want to know if anyone knows why Ford chose to go with the 550, I know it's probably something simple, but maybe it's not? Does anyone know the story behind the title? Either way I love it, I make music and I already have tons of lines about the name lol.

Sorry if this has been posted, but searching "S550" brought up probably every thread on the site lol.

Thanks!

There's no real story. Ford program codes are pretty standard. The first letter(s) denote the platform - Bxxx is small b-segment (Fiesta) - Cxxx is compact (Focus/Escape/C-max) - C/D is midsize (Fusion) - Dxxx is full-size (Taurus) - Sxxx is sport (Mustang)

The numbers are just a sequential project code based on when it kicks off. 2005 Mustang was S197, 2012 Focus was C520, 2015 F-150 is P552.

Could it be how many additional pounds it's put on since the S197? LOL

Was the SN95 the first time they started using the S code, or codes like that? Did the Fox Body have a code? I always just referred to it as the Fox Body.

And to confirm SN95 is from 1994-2004 correct? 1999-2004 was just considered a cosmetic refresh?

that's what my understanding is. 99-04 is deemed the "new edge"

Yes, precisely. Some people refer the '99-'04 refresh as "New Edge" as if it were a separate generation, but it is the same program number. By the way, the platform for the SN-95 Mustangs is called the FOX-4, which was indicative of the Fox platform revised for 1994.

I personally have not heard of a program name, but one might be out there.
