Used was the best I could do.
Nah man. 2016 mustang gt is a great car and plenty fast. The gearing on them is arguably better too for the manual. No hate here. Id rather have a 2016 mustang gt over a brand new 86 any day.

I think it's because I enjoy wrenching and installing parts. Also I do have a soft spot for Japanese cars. It's all I drove when I livef with my parents and the first car I bought was a 2012 Civic Si.

That's cool and all that but the OP was talking about a hypothetical race with a stock 2016 and not the value of a modified Gen 3 car.

To answer the OP's question. Yes, A 290whp BRZ would definitely keep up with a stock 2016 GT. You did lose me when you started talking about 400Zs retiring the Coyote though. The existence of one car does not negate another.
No, it wouldn't. Assuming both can launch well, the STOCK 2016 GT has about a 13% power-to-weight ratio advantage over a 290hp BRZ which we'll assume doesn't gain any weight over its stock 2800 lbs, which is very unlikely with an FI system or more powerful engine swap unless it's a go kart.

The '16 Mustang would roast it in the quarter mile.

C&D tested the 15-17 GT (hardtop) four times with trap speeds ranging from 112-113mph. The BRZ 95mph. It's going to need more than a 45% power boost.

Not too sure about your math there. The brz is 290 WHP. 2800/290 = 9.65. Let’s say the GT dynos at 380 with a manual transmission which would be kinda high but anyways. 3800/380 = 10. And im assuming much lower than 15% drivetrain loss for the GT. I think it would be close but that’s a stock car vs a modified car and at the end of the day the engine in the BRZ will have its limitation and the GT is the better choice.

You’re right, my bad, didn’t catch the “w” in 290rwhp. They’d be close. A few simple bolt-on mods and you’d still have a relaxed GT making more hp/lb than the BRZ w/ a highly strung flat 2.0.

having said that the same speed in a sub-3000 pound car would be FUN.
