One of the other great American inventions, is of course, the electric guitar! I've been playing for years, and many friends have told me "you need a telecaster!" and I've largely ignored 'em because I just don't like the looks of them.

Well that started to change when I visited the Thorn Custom Guitar shop a couple of years ago and saw what amazing work Ron Thorn does. He's also a car nut. One thing led to another, and this January I sat down with Ron to spec out a custom telecaster-style guitar that was inspired by my S550, and fixes some of the things I don't like about the original guitars. I knew we were on the same wavelength when we got to choosing the pickguard material and he looked at me and said "carbon fiber?" just like he'd read my mind...

I specced out Guard metallic paint, some control changes, the amazing 2Tek bridge, Ron's own "staple top" pickups, unfinished satin maple neck, hex nut and pony inlays, and of course the carbon fiber. The guitar arrived a few weeks ago, and it's phenomenal! I finally just got everything together to take a few photos this morning.

So without further ado, I present to you Thorn G/T #117 and friend:

Beautiful guitar. Love the mustang on the frets. And while I'm a huge fan of the Telecaster, why not go with a Fender Mustang? Unless you don't like the smaller scale, of course.

TBH, it didn't cross my mind. I had a builder in mind, he offered the Tele style, but not the Mustang, and I had a Tele sound in my head.

A buddy brought his Fender Custom Shop Tele over this afternoon so we could hear the Real Thing compared to this Thorn. Both unplugged and amplified, the Thorn turned out to be a way gutsier guitar, but still in the right sonic neighborhood. Count me as a happy camper.
