My understanding is that 96-02 was more of a "midcycle refresh" like a 991.2 911, or like the 2018+ S650 Mustang, though maybe more significant changes than most such refreshes.

Wikipedia seems to confirm, but I'm certainly no Viper expert:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Viper#First_generation_(SR;_1991–2002)
96-02 is a pretty major difference from the first gen cars. Especially the GTS coupes. The first gen cars are very unsettled. The second gen cars handle very well, have 50 more horsepower, and a nicer interior. If you drive both it’s a night and day difference.

Best of luck with it!

So it only had 25 miles on it when you got it? Did Dodge have any build numbers, certificates, production counts, or anything like that for those cars?

Just curious too, what’s an engine cost for one of those? Is the aftermarket just as big for them as the Mustang, or is it a much smaller Enthusiast base with not as much aftermarket support out there?

No it’s got 30k something miles on it, all from the original owner however. I bought from the second owner who only put 25 miles on it since he bought it ten years ago. They built 800 something ACRs total between 1999 and 2002. 250 or so in 1999, which is by far the best year to have as it has the forged motor and big cam. 2000 went to cast pistons and small cam. I’m not a numbers nerd but it is cool that they only built 53 1999 ACRs in black without stripes.

Rebuilding is pricey, anywhere from $10-25k I’ve heard. aftermarket is out there. There’s still headers/cams/head porting services/ superchargers etc out there and readily available but with only a few thousand gen ii vipers built total it’s obviously smaller than the mustang community. Most don’t drive them much anymore and treat them like collectibles. The good thing is at the end of the day it’s still a dodge so wear parts like ball joints etc are available at the auto parts store

When you get time, I’d love to hear a short video of it idling and with revs please 🙏.
I half read your mind, he’s an idle video I shot this morning

No traction control or ABS on these right? I’m pretty sure that most owners don’t set out to drive them in bad weather though.
Just think of what it was like driving a 69 Hemi Roadrunner with no power brakes, steering, drum brakes, and bias ply tires. It lived and we lived

You can catch a glimpse in the above video of my 68 mustang to the side. Manual drum brakes and just fixed the power steering this year. Obviously no airbags and lap belts only. That’s the car I learned to drive in. The viper is safety wonder compared to that car. lol. I wouldn’t mind ABS but I love the lack of traction control and other similar tech.

The only advantage of the forged pistons is if you wanted to supercharge the engine
As for performances, the fastest ever stock gen2 was a 2000 rt10
While most mechanical parts are available, body, electrical and trim are simply not available and therefore prices, when you can find it, are insane such at $5 to $10k for ONE used headlamp

I’d like to see the proof for that, I’ve never heard that about the RT/10. I’ve only heard rumors of a 1999 or early 2000 (forged piston) ACR running an 11.3 stock.

That’s some dudes unverified forum post, same place I’ve heard the 11.3 rumor. Don’t think either one is very credible lol.

With such a big engine and manufacturing tolerances, a difference between cars of 20hp + was pretty common
I believe that the 2000 is the first year for the better and bigger (10qts) oil pan
Btw, i have owned mine since new

Yes that’s true. The oil pan is much better in 2000. I wouldn’t mind owning a 2000+ car at all, in fact I almost bought a 2000 before I found mine. Yours looks great
