I place mine on the inside of the parking brake. Free and stable, win-win
This is what I do as well. I have a short (8 inch I think) usb lightning cable that is just long enough for the phone to sit between the hand brake and console while plugged in. Too short to pick it up and do anything while plugged in.

Bluetooth is good enough for me.
I can still hear the engine and exhaust fine.

Got this 3D printed holder off Etsy of all places. Wasn't sure about it, but it only cost like $15 or something. I prefer it over having something on the windshield or dash.
