Last week I had an amazing opportunity to get out to The Tail of The Dragon in North Carolina and attend the GT350 Mountain Run. Here is a little recap of my journey.
.
Growing up my family was pretty low income and I did not get a chance to travel. In my adult life I have tried to rectify this by getting out whenever I can. I am still late to the party, but luckily being part of the automotive community provides many opportunities to travel to new places, meet good people and do something I love.
.
Steve Spangler is a gearhead and runs Red Mirror Events. I got the opportunity to work with him on a set of Signature Wheels for his Wounded Warior Project GT350. He puts on this event and has been in my ear about attending. I was hesitant at first, but made it a point to go this year after the long Covid hiatus.
.
I had hopes of shipping one my cars out to the event but logistically it was expensive and I waited too long to pull it all together. So, I flew in to Nashville, TN without a rental car and hoped to figure it out once I arrived. With all rental cars booked up I got lucky and found an Alfa Romeo Guilia Q4 on Turo and made it happen.
.
I ended up driving through the Tail Of The Dragon in the middle of the night to get to the Fontana Village Resort in the night. It was a pretty hairy drive with the fog but tons of fun. I was pleasantly surprised the next morning when we met for the drivers meeting and over 100 GT350's and GT500's were in attendance. Attendees were broken into run groups of similar driving styles and departure times were staggered to ensure room to drive. Scheduled stops for fuel, food and scenic views allowed you to experience the locations and also have fun driving.
.
I really had a blast getting the opportunity to drive some great roads in the Alfa, borrow someone else's GT350 to run the Tail, ride in a supercharged GT350 through Devil's Triangle, and get the opportunity to drive one of the Fathouse Fabrications 800R Twin Turbo GT305's through some twisties.
.
Before the trip was over I had the chance to finally meet a lot of my Signature Wheel clients in person, see some amazing scenery, experience humidity in the rain, and have a genuinely good time. I look forward to attending again next year and hopefully bringing out one of my own cars.
