Setting sensitivity on ACC?

My user's manual states that the owner can adjust the 'sensitivity' of the Adaptive Cruise Control and/or Collision Warning System. It says that the sensitivity can be adjusted using the steering wheel controls. I know how to adjust the gap between my vehicle and the vehicle ahead.
What exactly is the 'sensitivity' and where/how is it controlled?
