Public Service Announcement, basically. My washing machine, during its final spin cycle, all of a sudden went way out of balance and starting vibrating the entire place. I get to it, it's smoking and I see flames. I take it apart using a YouTube video of a repair guy describing the commonality of the cause of this happening to find what you see in these photos. The machine is 11 years old and obviously out of warranty. Samsung, when I called, had the nerve to tell me that because the machine was taken apart by me (not an authorized repair person) and that it's out of warranty, "it has no value to them" and they will not help in any way. It has value to me -- it washes my clothes and an in-kind replacement is about $900. The clear issue is a materials defect -- the part that you see broken supports the drum. This should have been made of stainless steel or a hard composite plastic that would not degrade like this. Found out later the internet is awash with this exact same issue happening, only with me it was a spin cycle and that caused the out of balance drum to rub against the tub (metal to plastic contact at high RPM). I figured Samsung would maybe throw me a few bucks... absolutely nothing. I was very nice on the phone, too. Nothing. It's way out of warranty, I get it. But who's washing machine starts on fire when it dies? Maybe it leaks. But starts on fire? Maybe the dryer, but the washer? What if I wasn't home? Insane.
