Hello fellow convertible owners!

I recently noticed that the rubber lining trim around my convertible top towards the trunk are warped out around 1 inch on the corners (left side is more, pls see attached pics)

Car’s warranty ending end of May so this week I went to dealer about this issue. They said they need to change the whole trim which requires the convertible top to be first removed completely and it may not be covered by the warranty if they see any damage caused by previous accident of which carfax shows structural damage (although I dont know how since the repairs were done only to the front / passenger side of the vehicle and should have nothing to do with the convertible top).

Anyways, even under warranty, I am not sure if I should go under an extensive repair job just for getting the trim in place. Looks like there is no guarantee that this wont repeat again after repair, actually as I saw in a brand new mustang convertible in the dealer that the same places are also warping out maybe quarter of an inch.

So, did you guys experience an issue like this?
Dealer told me it is only aesthetic issue and wont cause any water leak and further damage, do you agree? Would you recommend going through lifting the top and replacing the trim (although it may cost a lot if not covered by warranty) or is there a way simply glue the trim down (with shoe goo etc.)?

I will go back to dealer this Monday so I’d greatly appreciate any responses you might have this weekend. Thanks!

Yeah, mostly I was concerned if it would leak to trunk or convertible top mechanism but service manager told me that it should not. I might just leave as it is, not worth to go through an extensive work on it, and definitely not worth to pay.

Tough one. It looks bad, mine was replaced twice when my roof was replaced. They certainly didn’t need to remove the roof to refit the trim but it was doing what yours was due to poor dealer repair. Mine is fine now and I hope it stays that way. If it doesn’t then I’d look at pushing it back on and glueing it.

Mine below, before and after repair.

Thanks for the input, looks like I have the same issue as yours. I dont know why dealer is saying they need to put the whole top off, and they need 4-5 days to replace the trim, and make me pay for it if they find any damage related to a previous accident. It sounds like just their way to push back on me to avoid dealing with it. Interesting that your left side also warped more, just like my case.

However, at this point, I also think the issue might come back even after they fix it as it did for you. Maybe just glueing it down is the best way to go. I might wanna try a product that I have a video of here: It uses 3M adhesive glue that bonds metal to rubber fairly easy and strong. You might wanna use it if the issue repeats again, and of course I hope it does not.

BTW, the warping seems to be more in the summer months and probably is due to simple expanding of the rubber, I've even saw a brand new convertible on the dealer and it started to warp out, possibly simply by sitting under the sun all day. I am OK with it, as long as I know no leak and damage caused to the inside, which I still could not get a solid answer for.

My dealer actually changed the roof and re-fitted this part, that poor refit is what you can see in the image. They ordered a new part after that and fitted it properly.

Why did they need to change the roof in the first place? Was it because of this warping or some other issue?

I had mine replaced at 9k garage kept miles due to the rubber starting to delaminate. It looked like hard water spots that would never clean off. The dealer body shop literally pulled it off in the parking lot while I watched and stuck the new one on. Took about 10 minutes.

I had the same problem. I took it to local dealership and had the entire rubber part replace for free under warranty.

I see, it feels they try to avoid replacement for mine as they say they have to take the whole top off and has to be in dealer for 4 days or so. How did the dealer stick the replacement part? Did they just glue it down? Rubber does not have any signs of wear, so I can just apply a little adhesive and stick it, I bet this issue will come back again even if the whole thing is replaced.

Can you take it to another dealer? I’d do that until you get the answer you want, I wouldn’t trust a dealer with my car who had no interest in the job.
