In my recent post, I reported this odd creaking/clicking sound coming from the left rear wheel. I read on this forum for a couple of months and it came down to 2 things, and both have been updated by Ford. Axle nuts and these thrust washers that sit between the hub and half shaft. These washers are much thicker and stronger than the weak old ones. Problem solved once again!

The picture of the washer on the shaft is not mine, it's from another poster's thread.

Bumping this thread to come in and document that this fixed my car too. I was about to post a new thread about it but this one covers it as well as a few others. I had new wheel bearings, new axle nuts and still had the metallic clicking in the driver rear hub. Replaced the old thrust washer with the new updated one and the noise is gone.

Fantastic. Checked rear suspension bushings, Checked rear bearings for play, and axle bolts — no play in rear bearings and no bearing "whirrr". Checked axle bolt-tightness to 150 with digital torque wrench. From other read-threads — sounds like it can cause ABS signal issues if the thrust-washer goes completely and interferes with ABS speed sensor? But can it cause bearing failure?

So I've had this on the driver's side for like four years. I installed GT350 axles, new hubs, and new axle nuts, new endlinks, new vertical links, not the issue has never gone away. I guess I'll have to tear back into the rear suspension, which means I'm going to end up buying other stuff to install at the same time. You know, make it worthwhile...

Yes, it seems to be a very common issue with the S550 across all platforms. Some folks are saying the replacement thrust washers appear to be of better quality than the originals.

I can't remember the install process for the axles, but isn't the thrust washer part of that install? I've replaced axle nuts three times with the latest and greatest.

I only have a clicking early morning when i get the car to move, after that its just under moderate to hard acceleration. Doesnt click when I'm normally driving. I wonder if this could be the issue.

More than likely. The upgraded Ford parts are cheap. Might as well upgrade these and the axle nuts.

My rear axle thrust washer went bad too, I had symptoms like rear end wag/shake instability under throttle and also noises when shifting from reverse to drive. Both axles were replaced under warranty.

Can anyone explain what this thrust washer does exactly? I’m curious and wasn’t able to find an answer.I’d appreciate if someone could clarify

Thrust washers are flat washers that are located between a rotating surface and a stationary component. They support the axial load or side to side motion on a shaft and prevent movement along that shaft.
