Stymee should be proud of this thread :) I don't have a Mustang any longer, but I still come back to lurk more than a normal person would admit!

Just an update that doesn't belong here or anywhere else for that matter... I'm about to spend what two Roush kits and installation would cost on upgrading my 2024 Corolla GR. I took out the stock clutch with too many launches at the drag strip, so I figured fuck it. Time for more power since my aftermarket clutch voided my transmission warranty :p. That little 1.6L 3 cylinder is not good for much more than stock power (300hp) without a few upgrades so why stop with Valve springs?!?

Valve springs, rocker retainers, cams, head studs, pistons, rods, bigger turbo, Aventuri Intake, Jackson FMIC, downpipe, full exhaust and dyno tuned. The motor will be good for 700hp afterwards but will only be tuned for 400whp because my transmission is going to need a rebuild and new hub, syncro's and gears. Next year when I tune it for E85 I guess. My wife put the brakes on the transmission after I told her what it cost for the first round of upgrades.

Called a few shops here in the land of the sun and no one would take the work. Said it was too new. Soooo.... I'm driving it to Chicago in a few weeks to drop it off for surgery. Even though I'm spending about the cost of a loaded Corolla SE on my Corolla GR, I still have about $30k to go before I match what I spent on the Mustang. (Yeah... I spent around $100k on the Mustang before trading it.. Well... I guess Geico spent the $14k on the replacement engine that had VCT/Phaser issues)

Just to keep this relevant to this thread. I'm still the only person I know of to blow up a Gen 3 motor with a Roush kit on it so maybe I learned my lesson? Wait... What was the question?

Mine blew up on stock kit/stock tune. Cracked #5 cylinder bore/liner. Happened on a 2nd attempt to make a pull after finally breaking in the clutch, which was done along with OPGs and CS, you know, trying to make sure I didn't blow it up...

I would like to blame it on Ford but it was probably for the best. I don't know how I killed cylinder 6 but those headers with no cats probably had a hand in it :) Seriously though, that car screamed for attention and my foot only had on/off when it came to the go pedal. The automatic just made it so easy.

I couldn't get rid of my midlife crisis car (ok, 2nd because I traded a 2018 to get out of a lease) for nothing though so I'm doing this one right from the beginning. It's not a bright green Mustang so it's got nothing to prove. Just a slow ass Toyota Corolla in non-descript white.

To the guys still rocking this thread, you deserve credit for really pushing the platform, it's been fun reading and keeps me coming back.

Definitely nimbler and more maneuverable than the Mustang. And a lot slower. :) I doubt it will ever be a 10 second car but that may be the better option for me! I couldn't drive the Mustang like I do the GR to be honest. I go through a shit ton less gas and my tires should last longer than 5,000 miles. I would have never taken the Mustang on a real track with that much power on tap because I wouldn't have been able to control it. Maybe if I would have done it when the Mustang was stock, but I would have been scared shitless to try and modulate the gas :)

Honestly, the Mustang drew attention... A lot of it. Some of it unwelcome because I don't like to talk to EVERY SINGLE PERSON that I run into. Trouble is, I couldn't fix it personally and wasn't going to pay to fix a motor that was fucked up from the get-go.

I always knew I'd be back in a Corolla so here we are :) It will probably surprise a lot more cars than the Mustang ever did. The look on people's face when you tell them it's a 3 cylinder is priceless. Best time on the strip stock was a 13.8 @ 100mph. Best time in the blown Mustang was a 10.7 @ 135.. Pre-blown motor. Never saw that again.

TL/DR. I love it, it's a fucking blast to drive. I had fun with the Mustang, but I don't miss it. On the street with 20" DR's I couldn't get a better 0-60 than 4.6 compared to a low of 2.9 on the strip. The Corolla is at 4.9 so far (goodbye clutch) and I haven't been able to get anywhere near that on the strip.

Sold fords for a while and on rare occasions the RTR cars with roush blowers would have a choppy idle. They’d still put down power though.

Probably the Ford VCT issue. Mine was like that occasionally and then it would start dying on me when I stopped at a light or at you know... 80mph when the car shifted gears. New engine was direct from Ford but it was a refurb so my guess was they bought the car back and fixed the VCT's and called it a day. Probably never bothered looking at the cam phasers. My issue was that I had no cats and the car was tuned so when Geico covered it through mechanical breakdown coverage, the dealer could have given 2 shits about the issues on the new engine. I'm just lucky that they covered the cats when it melted them less than a week after being put back on. 2 months later when I would start it, it would idle rough, and you couldn't even back it out of the driveway without it dying. 5 minutes later it would start up just fine and I could drive it around. My driveway was sloped quite a bit so when I would drive it uphill, the VCT's wouldn't have any oil and it would die.

You could tell when the VCT's weren't working properly because the sound of the engine would change in pitch and VVT would kick off. I thought it was an issue with the AE valves at first but then I started logging the VVT intake and exhaust and you could see it.

In my experience (not with mine thank god). These gen 3s especially can really be hit or miss. I’ve seen them blow head gaskets at 5k miles. Even come from the factory with piston slap. The RTRS were usually on another level though. Best company we worked with was Saleen and Shelby America. The other ones like roush and rtr were a little more on the eh side.

Member @Autopart101 did a custom setup which employed usage of custom cai and 103 mm tb

You will have to also get a cowl induction hood for tb clearance
