I had a 16' GT PP MT - loved it, although 1 & 2 felt a little short at times, but otherwise, the butt dyno felt good.

I sold that car a while back and i'm looking at a 19-20 GT PP MT - however, i'm reading that the feel of power is lacking for some. I watched the engineering explained video yesterday - so now i'm curious...

Looking for personal experiences from those that have had both MT cars and your thoughts on the way the car puts down power.

Thank you!!

I've got manuals in my 18 and 19, and from the 16 that I drove, you're right, the first two gears feel wussier, and I'd guess that the biggest part of that is the gearing, as the newer transmissions went back to a double overdrive, 4th gear 1:1 like some earlier years.

3.66, 2.43, 1.69, 1.32, 1.00, 0.65 -- MT82 2016
3.24, 2.10, 1.42, 1.00, 0.81, 0.62 -- MT82-D4 2019

With 3.55's, 4th takes you to your top speed around 155, but yeah, you wonder how much nicer it'd be to have some middle gears, because 2nd is just so long. That said, perhaps lagging your acceleration just a touch might be just what the doctor ordered, because you don't hear about people blowing up their MT82-D4's anywhere as near as you did with people in the MT82's. Sure, they changed other components inside of it with the 2018 refresh, but it's no work of art like the TR-3160 in the GT350.

What it feels like should take a back seat to the fact that even with taller gearing, the 18+ M6 GTs trap 3 mph more than the 15-17 M6 GTs and is 0.3 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile (I won't even mention the 120 mph trap speed of the A10 PP1 GT - oh wait, too late). I do wish that they kept more similar gearing to the 15-17 GT, but probably had to update it to meet target mpgs.

I owned a '15 GT PP1 with a MT82 and now an '18 GT PP1 with the MT82-D4. I don't drag race, but I do autoX. I may be one of the few, but I like the revised gearing on the '18+. For one, it is more relaxed around town. Less upshifting. 1st and 2nd are more usuable. Also, 5th is more usuable. I don't feel like I need to upshift to 6th gear when I'm doing lke 50-60 mph. Another advantage on the autoX course, is that 2nd gear is longer and I can get a few more mph out of it rather than riding around on the rev limiter. The shifter is also slightly improved vs the '15, but both still pale in comparison to the feel of a MGW shifter.
Basically a '18 with 3.73 gears feels like a '15-'17 with 3.55 gears but similar 0-60 times, if that makes sense.

I didn't realize it had the 3.73's - I assumed it was 3.55's still - thanks for pointing that out! That should make 1 & 2 way better - I hated 1st with the 3.55's in my 16

I too don't mind the gearing in the D4. First is usable in normal daily driving, 2nd will get you most quick runs to 75, and 3rd should get you to the trap on the dragstrip at about 114-115 saving you another shift. 5th is a great compromise to the 5th-6th gap in the MT-82. You can run 80 in rush hour traffic and still have good acceleration without needing to shift to 6th. About the only time I use 6th is highway cruising. About the only drawback would be road courses where you have that extra gear with the MT82.

Just doing some simple math, the '18 up would need a rear axle ratio of 4.21:1 to match the 2017 3.71:1.

Quite a difference is mechanical advantage. I can just imagine what my Bullitt would have been like with that gear ratio and nearly a 7,800 RPM redline. I think it would have kept me NA.
