I think one of the early "R"s was intended to be a track only car (but apparently licensed for the street?) and thus carried the limitation of a competition license to buy one.

NOT the case with later "R"s (2000 Cobra R) nor the Boss Laguna Seca. Ford is allowing factory mods (AC/Stereo) etc to this new R so it is clearly NOT just a track car so the competition license will not be required.

So everyone can buy and drive one if they have the money. But with the understanding that YOU in the GT350R and say Scott Maxwell (Ford Racing driver) in a 2005 V6 Auto on a real road course YOU will lose.

Yes. A competition race license.
The only thing that Ford has confirmed in regards to this is on the GT350S model which is a non street legal factory race car. If you have an article or press release from Ford saying this please share.

Wow... if you adjust for inflation... the 2016 GT350R is actually less than a 2000 Cobra R was....

2000 Cobra R $54,995 (2015 $74,634)
2016 GT350R around $70,000ish

Pricing seems fine. The only thing I'm concerned with is the hp. After having my gt for a couple months I don't feel 520 hp is going to be anywhere close to making me happy. I'm already in need of a serious boost in hp, but have held off because I was waiting for the gt350. I want the voodoo motor, but not sure it will be enough. The gt500 can't come soon enough. Almost ordered a hellcat the other day, but my huge dislike for dodge kept me from pulling the trigger.
