Several years ago I got distracted changing the oil on my car. Somehow I forgot to put the oil filter on before I started the car. The oil light normally went out after about 5 seconds of the car running, so after about 10 seconds and the light not going off I shut the car off. There was 4 liters of oil on my garage floor. So in 10 seconds the pump drained all the oil out of the engine. How long do you think it would take to fill that filter? I bet it's full before the engine even starts.

So no I don't prefill the filter. I made that mistake when that car had 60,000 kms on it. I sold it with 220,000 kms and never had a single problem with the engine.

I always pour a little oil into the filter on my mustang (about 1/3 to 1/2 a qt). i fill the filter on my wifes truck because it sits upright and I dont add any to my audi. It all depends on the angle of the filter. I love the oil filter system on my old 7 series BMW it was a cartage type that was located up top and I could drop the filter cartage in and fill the can, close the lid and start her up. I wish the mustang was like this

It was probably left off accidentally. Things happen!
Or the "I don't have a lot of time" way to check if the oil pump works

I did before, but after getting a car where the filter is almost "upside down" I haven't done it and honestly I don't think it will do any difference. As stated the oil pump will most likely fill the filter before the engine is up an running - and also everything in the car is already lubricated from existing oil.

At idle, it would take a long time for an engine to lock up that already has oil in the system.

Really think that was a accident, what was the first clue? Believe it or don't, pit crews, even to most basic once a month Saturday night racers.

Have experienced folks, one dose not just put on the T shirt .
