But can't you shoot one if it's on your property? We can in NC.

I think technically I could, but I don't for a couple of reasons....
The elk don't come through our property during hunting season....they are still way out in the higher country during that time.
The other thing is that a lot of my neighbors go apeshit with any type of hunting anywhere close to our neighborhood.
I get it to a point...I wouldn't want to endanger anyone or make them feel unsafe. With that said, a lot of them go ballistic with even bow hunters or duck hunters on the river on Forest Service land that is at least a mile from any houses.
When I used to hunt with my father-in-law we always went at least 10 miles from any houses to avoid any potential conflicts.

Yeah, that's probably for the best. But a bow is really quiet. 😁😁

Ever notice that dog spelled backwards spells God. God sent us dogs to show us how much he loves us but after a while he thought our heads were getting too big so then he sent us cats to get our heads right sized again.

It's definitely hard to lose them for sure. I lost two within a year. One from blood clot in his brain and other from an enlarged heart. They were both rescues... they did have wonderful lives. I don't want to get another one just for that reason. It sucks but nothing and no one lasts forever.
I once heard a comedian say getting a puppy is the first step on a journey to sadness. But it's so worth it for all the joy they bring into our lives. We had a bunch of relatives over for breakfast one Sunday and my ex was bragging how our GSD was our last dog how she didn't want to be tied down to a dog when she wanted to travel. So I looked at my uncle who was sitting next to me and said I really Love my wife boy am I gonna miss her he almost choked on his pancakes.

I am allergic to dogs (and cats) so people ask why I have one and I respond that it is much better to live with one than without one.....

Bend OR. The old stomping grounds.
Don't know where those elk came from, but they weren't around there when I was a kid.

Nice.
Uhhhhhhh They came west with the wagon trains across the Oregon Trail. At least that's what the sign at the welcome center on I- 84 said. Which, makes you how old ......... 🙄:cwl:

I've been living about 8 miles SW of Sunriver since 1991.....about 21 miles south of Bend.
Definitely more elk now than 30 years ago. Elk herds are doing well... Deer not so much. I think the elk used to migrate through, but now it seems they are around all year, generally speaking.
They come in by our house from about Thanksgiving until spring break at the end of March.
I think they head out toward Fall River and the high country the rest of the year.
My house is right near where Fall River meets up with the Big Deschutes.
