Yesterday was pond clean out and opening for spring. Lost one fish over winter.

That pond seems shallow for fish of that size to overwinter in…? I know nothing about this lol just a random observation. Do you feed them ? Does it freeze over? Just curious. :)

Well it's deeper than it appears in the photos. There are three levels in that pond. First level is about knee deep. The second level almost waist deep. The deepest part is about chest deep. Maybe 4 and a half feet deep?

For winter the waterfall is turned off and a submirged pump is put in which aerates the water. Plus a net is put across the pond to help keep debris out and protects the fish from predators.

When it gets very cold the pond freezes over. Even over the pump that splashes the water surface. This creates a dome over that part but you can hear the water still splashing inside.

It the winter you do not feed the koi. I think they go into a zombie state when the water turns cold.

Spring and fall we feed them typical koi food. Summertime I will mix it Cheerios! That has the same food content as the koi food but much less cost wise. Plus they get big. A lady down the road has her koi about 15 to 20 lbs. She feeds her koi non-stop. Lol

Good times, lol
I had a similar setup for years, but a hidden leak in the liner forced a repurpose to just a water fall feature. Good luck with the koi...lost a few one time while away and the pump failed.

Sorry for your loss.

FWIW, I had terrible luck trying to teach one of our dogs to drive. It's incomprehensible that she did not figure out that turning the steering wheel changed the direction of the car. But I gave up after constantly having to take control to prevent her running into a light pole. Maybe if I let her hit a pole or two, she would be more motivated, but she wasn't on my auto policy.
