Hello team!
I saw couple of threads with questions related to the missing/lack of Shift Light in the center console for the automatic transmission in 2018-2023 Premium models.
Even some of the 2015-2017 V6 Base models, did come with the Shift light. Feel free to prove me wrong here.
I have made such conversion with the OEM parts and I will be able to provide you with a step by step guide.
Installation:
- Takes about 30-60minutes;
- Difficulty: Super easy as long as you are not afraid to disassemble the center console;
- Requires to purchase a 2015-2017 gear shifter (Can be broken, doesn't really matter the condition. Should cost roughly 10-30$ based on the condition), with the correct wiring harness.
Tools needed:
- Your hands;
- Plastic trim remover;
- Flathead screwdriver.
Disclaimer:
- Please note that, there is no Part number for the wiring harness or the LED plate for those parts;
- Ford has made those parts universal and they do apply for both Right hand drive and Left hand drive;
- I am aware that some of the 2018 models, did come with the LED for the gear shifter. Please double check whether you have the LED plate under the top assembly, or the wiring harness in the actual gear lever;
- The following guide can also be applied to the 2015-2017 model years, which does not have the Light for the gears.
Let me break it down into couple of, easy to follow, steps which are straightforward to follow.
Step 1: Before proceeding with the purchase of correct parts, please make sure that your Lever does, or does not, have the wiring harness and LED in the gear booth. You can simply lift the plastic trim around the lever and check on the right side of the trim, whether there is a connector (Steering wheel on the right side, will have a connector on the Right side of the trim).
Step 2: Search through Ebay or any other websites/junkyard that does offer "used" Shift lever with the wiring harness and the LED Plate. You will have to get the details from the pictures posted with the offered items, as the wiring harness does not contain any part numer, and neither the LED strip.
Step 3: Disassemble the "used" Shift lever and take the wiring harness from the lever
Step 4: Disassemble the leather booth and remove the LED strip and plastic glass
Step 5: There are only 3 items which you will need, in order to finish the installation (PRNDS plate is not needed, as we will be using our original plate):
- Wiring Harness;
- Wiring Harness with LED light;
- Plastic glass, taken from the leather booth.
Step 6: Disassemble your center console, as you will have more room to access the Shifting Lever - You don't have to remove the actual lever assembly and shift wire from your car.
Step 7: Remove the original wiring harness you had on the Shifting Lever and connect the new one with the Connector for the LED strip.
Step 8: Remove your original Leather booth. Disassemble the PRNDS plastic and inster the LED plate and LED plastic Glass.
Step 9: Before re-assembling everything, make sure that everything works. You can turn your light on, and check whether the dimming works.
Step 9: Put all of the trim back together and ask Ford, why they did cheap out on 2$ part.
