Per Ford (officially) the 2011-2019 F150/Mustang 5.0 “Typewriter Tick” is a normal characteristic

So they get 100 engines back with the tick. They tear them down and find nothing out of spec. They put some of them back together and run the torture test. All pass and still tick. They get torn down and they find nothing out of spec

They get 25 more back and run them through the test. All pass they tear them down and find nothing out of spec.

They declare the tick a normal operating characteristic of the engine.

I do know the above has happened with a different manufacturer.
You nor anyone else here unless they work for Ford directly related to the tick investigation knows how they conducted their investigation into the ticking issue. If they really don't "know" what's causing it, then they need some in depth engineering investigation. Like said, I'm betting they know exactly what the cause is, and that's why they came to the "conclusion" that it's a "normal characteristic" and not harmful ... releasing a SSM saying so. But the thing is, not all Coyote engines tick, so there is a reason for that. What else would it be beside mechanical differences during production.

Could very well be that if the rod side clearance is on the maximum side of the range it could be a ticker. I'm betting when Ford slaps engines together they don't check the assembled short block side clearance on every rod and crank journal bearing. Probably don't even check the dimensions on every individual rod, crank, block, etc produced. More like random checks, which could let a lot of unchecked parts into production.

Think about, if it were a rod clearance they would make an adjustment to the machining process. Management does not like complaints.

Whatever it is they can't fix it and it causes no harm to the engine.
Excessive side clearance won't cause any harm, and that's another clue in the mystery. If it was caused by something that caused harm, Ford would have done more than put out an SSM that said it's a "normal characteristic" ... on some engines, but not all. Why only on "some" ... there's a reason it's only on some, and not with all of them either ticking or not.

Fact still remains that changing the friction level of the oil effects the tick ... so think about why that's happening.

a very slight bind (or high spot on the side face) causes the rod to "snap back" and hit a limit. Making it extra slick could mean it doesn't bind or it releases sooner with less force to dissipate and so doesn't move as far.

or if they check it's with a popsicle stick from lunch. :)

Ford can't even figure out how to put the right quantity of oil into pans, or window seals on so they don't leak, or not have a Snicker's bar worth of sealer on a trunk panel joint. Check side clearance?!?!? You're hilarious!

Close your eyes and imagine your Mustang is idling. 😄 🙃 Then add some Ceratec and hear it magically go away.

And that rod is way out of tolerance.

If I were to make a guess it would be chain slap from the tensioner being on the wrong side of the chain.

Out of all friction modifiers that eliminate the tick only two actually work - ceratec and Ford's XL17 or whatever that number is. I also rememberr one case here at the forum where one member added black carbon powder to the engine with immediate tick elimination. Per google xl17 is a black carbon substance in oil btw.

So makes me think that it is not a friction but rather some padding that is present in aforementioned modifiers.

You strike two pieces of metal and they clunk. You place a piece of rubber in betwen and no clunk anymore.

can I buy a 5000 count of H2 pencils at Costco?
Figure I can put the cores in a blender right?

Or maybe I'll just crush some Kingsford... :)

Ceratec doesn't contain black carbon powder, but modifies the friction level. I believe a few members have reported that using some motor oils high in moly content helped the ticking.

Could be there is some extra parts collision "padding" going on with additives, but when you look at the ratio of 150 ml of Ceratec to 10 quarts of oil the concentration is very small, yet that little of amount of friction modifier has made the ticking go away in some cases. The ratio of Motorcraft XL-17 to the sump capacity was also very small, since the bottle was only 8 fl-oz (237 ml).

Just put some used oil out of diesel in there. 😄

pretty sure the specsheet was calling for 600ml per 10qts.

Maybe I'm deaf but I've never heard ticking out of my '19 GT nor the '23 M1. I use Penzoil 5w30, 5w40 and 10w30. Also Costco Dexos2 5w30. Haven't run the Euro yet.

Yes, but some members here have reported that adding only a half bottle of Ceratec (150 ml) made their tick go away. Seems that some engines take more than others to quiet them.

Some just don't tick regardless of what oil is used. My 2015 doesn't tick at all, and I've used 3 different motor oils (5W-20 and then switched up to a 5W-30).
