Guys, I believe there are many options when ordering parts from US but does anyone know if it would be cheaper if you had a friend/family member living there.
By that, I mean would it be cheaper to get it delivered to them (which in most cases would be free from the supplier above a certain price threshold) and then organise a shipping courier to pick up and then ship back home to the UK?

Just wondering if anybody has done that or have experience of using a shipping courier to handle all charges from US to UK apart from fedex and UPS.

Have ordered from CJ and AM in the past and used their shipping charges. Currently considering using Stackry, but just curious about other options...

Heya Mate,

Easier to get stackry, ship it all there, have some inventive 'cost' of the entire parcel and shipped all together - they will rebox them.

The "other" place [Mustang Owners Club of Great Britain (mocgb.net)] bring several containers a year over full of bits the members have ordered. In the forums they post up the dates and details. A slower way than Stackry for sure, but cheaper on the shipping for large items.

I tried it several years ago (long before getting a Mustang) to bring over a large winch and frame which was too big and awkward to ship privately and everything worked fine. You do have to go and pick the stuff up though (I think it was Hampshire but can't remember) so again, that might be inconvenient. But if it was a lot of stuff and I wasn't in a hurry, I would use them again.

Oh and as for having a friend or family there to take delivery. Yes absolutely, for two reasons. First is that the domestic shipping is either free or way cheaper than sending over here (CJ's do free USA shipping for example) and second assuming you get out to visit said friends and family you can bring the mods back in your suitcase. If you want to get them to ship to you, I'm sure they will rebox everything economically for free and it's up to you/them to put the customs declared value on...

Thanks for that mate... Didn't think to re-open and re-package into a smaller possible box...
I guess no harm in trying and then determining if worthy of the extra hassle...

Christian's referring to Ron Fenton at STS Imports

http://www.stsimports.co.uk/

Ron's a member of the Mustang Owners Club, so regularly posts dates when containers are leaving the US, but he runs STS Imports so supports the import of any items.

As you mention, shipping is often free within the US, so you can get items delivered to Ron's storage facility in Florida FOC and, from there, Ron will put it in one of his containers. It'll then end up at his place in Essex, where you can either collect, or Ron will arrange for it to be sent by courier (I paid £70 for 5 wheels to be couriered from his place to him....just as an example).

Not the quickest way to get stuff here, but cheap and reliable.

:)

When I went looking for a borla cat back in the uk I found a distributor here who was less than the cost of us version + shipping over - and that was before the cost of import duty.

How much can you get away with? Say you're shipping an exhaust that cost £1,000 could you, say, put it down as £500?
You could put it down at $50 too. But that's fraud ;)

It's your call at the end of the day

^ This, be creative, don't be stupid. I had a decklid sent over, they wanted £55 in duty fee's for it, after discussing the items worth was only $70 they dropped that fee to c£20 (granted this is a case of them over estimating).

I know someone who gets parts flown over each week from the US
you could always ask how much, and they could fit it for you
and it a kosher company, the people I got my CS and the Borla fitted with
