I have the canister style on my 2017 Gen 1 (that has not blown up or used oil) and I prefer it to the cartridge type. I get concerned about the long term durability of the plastic housing and end cap after many heat cycles and years.

I do my own oil changes and check
It on occasion. The dealer changed my oil last fall and I specifically asked if it was torques. They confirmed they torqued it but I checked it when I arrived home and it was hand tight ..,..arggggg
My girlfriend’s 2010 VW Jetta has the Plastic cartridge oil filter Housing.

I do the oil changes on her car and that plastic housing is just fine after 10 years of use.

If you have a 5.2 with the canister filter there is a TSB from Ford. They replace the filter housing, some gaskets/O rings and a sensor, I think. Mine is still at the shop but I'll post the part list when complete and a better account of the work. I didn't have problems with the canister getting lose but it was dripping oil which blows back on the cats. Too much and bad juju! And messy.

Quick update. Warranty work completed to address TSB 18-2159 (Attached). Replaces Oil Filter adapter, oil cooler line O rings, oil pressure sensor to address leaks associated with the filter adapter housing.

Looking forward to the parts list. Do you have a copy of the service bulletin? I haven't heard/seen it yet

Just updated my post. But here's the TSB. They replaced the oil filter assembly, gasket, oil cooler line O rings and oil pressure sensor. Also did an oil service with the new filter (metal core) I think its a 2087 vs. a 2062. (but that's from memory...) All under warranty.

"5.2L - Oil Leak From Oil Filter Area - Built On 24-Jan-2017 And Through 15- Sep-2017" - the covered vehicles all have the cartridge type filter already? Not the spin-on canister filter.

This thread is about a car that failed because of the spin-on canister filter.

Understood. One of the fixes to that is a conversion kit to the new canister style. Thought I'd share some additional information.

I think you are conflating terms and causing confusion.

The new style is the cartridge style, not the canister style.

This is a cartridge:

This is a canister:

The TSB you mentioned does not involve switching from one to the other.

You are right. One of the resolutions to the spin-on style loosening up is the conversion to the cartridge.

My apologies. I was going by the reference to the new housing and yes it holds the cartridge filter. The techs refer to the thing the cartridge goes into as the canister. The other filter is called the spin on style by the techs I have chatted with. Still familiarizing with lingo....

While the thing that holds the cartridge might rightly be called a canister, the best way to disambiguate is to refer to the filter style, not any other part.

Ford Performance refers to the upgrade kit as the "cartridge oil filter adapter kit" : https://performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-6881-52CA

Once the terminology is determined here, don't lose sight of the fact that the problem the TSB was for was with the oil pressure sensor, not the filter. That said, I suspect that Ford took advantage of any excuse they could find to get spin-ons replaced with cartridges. It was vastly cheaper than fixing engines where the spin-on detached because of sloppy installation.

Again, note from the TSB:

5.2L - Oil Leak From Oil Filter Area - Built On 24-Jan-2017 And Through 15- Sep-2017
That only covers vehicles that already have the cartridge style filter setup from the factory.

You're reading something into it that isn't there.

Even more precise. Thanks.
