, I’d rather have a normal sedan, maybe with some mild sporting pretensions to stave off boredom
'22 VW Jetta GLI. All the goodness of the Mk7.5 GTI in not-hatch and $4000 cheaper than equiv trim GTI. How that works I don't know.

If I had $80k, I’d rather have a normal sedan, maybe with some mild sporting pretensions to stave off boredom, but ultimately something spacious and economical, and then I’d want a raw toy car that I could enjoy on the streets without needing to hit triple digits or 1 G+ mid-corner, like a Miata or GR86.
I'd have something like my Fiesta or a GR86 (I don't fit in a Miata) for year round poor weather driving, and a Mustang for track and nice days.

On the high-speed road courses the big HP, heavy cars will generally lead the pack, On the short technical courses, the same low HP cars you passed on the big course will be leading the pack. If you can afford it have one of each.
Do you really need 460 HP just to drive to the liquor store or park at the train station?

Drove a 2006 Civic Si before selling it and getting into my 2014 S197 V6. Such a fun car to drive. Loved the 8300 rpm redline.

I agree no one needs 460 HP. But we are talking about what we like/want here, right?

If I could buy a 3,000 lb vehicle with a manual transmission and V8 engine, 300 HP or so would probably satisfy me just fine. I think my 2,800 lb Fiesta ST with 200 HP is fun enough, actually. An even lighter vehicle - less power is wanted. But in a 4,000 lb vehicle 420 hp or whatever my Coyote makes isn't that great IMO. It's good enough, but I want more. It actually is enough for track use, but on the street I'd like more.

RIGHT! I think it's because GLIs look like Vanilla. If a little kid drew a car, it would look like a Jetta. Arguably, the best sleeper/cop avoider on the market!

Similarly, I have a 2018 GT (not as cool as a GT350, but still fun) and a 2016 Mazda CX-5 as well

I daily drive an older Honda Accord 4 banger manual and it's always been a fun car to drive.

Small cars have their place. They don't have the raw power but do ok when you wind them up. The handling is just hard to beat. When I was a young pup in the early 80s I worked on a foreign used car lot and got to sample some cars of the day. Loved the balance of the Datsun 280z, fell in love with the nimbleness of the 1st and 2nd gen VW GTi. Drove a Mustang vert of that period and the cowl shake, oh my. It was a wet noodle.

The most fun I have ever had in a car was my 2000 Escort ZX2 S/R with a nice autocross setup, light weight wheel, ported head and hi-rev cams. Wasn't anything crazy, but it was just under 2500lbs, and made about 160whp.

Missing the fun I had revving that out and tossing it into corners is why I'm thinking of getting something small again, but small fun cars don't really exist. The New Integra is almost as big as the Mustang, the Si is only a little smaller, the WRX weighs a lot now...and is ugly AF.

I'm semi tempted to get a lightly used STi, or a GOLF R. They seem to be the best you can get from that market now. The 86/BRZ are too low for me to comfortably get in/out of. The Miata and used S2k are both to small for my fat ass.

I cant name anything else in that market other than the Veloster N, or Civic Type R which are to 'boi racer" for my tastes.

I was torn between my base GT and an ecoboost with the larger screen, navigation, drive modes....both ten speed. I drove both, first the GT, then the eco, and I almost bought the eco...and occasionally, I wish I had. More usable range of power...the GT is cool, is fun, and is pretty much just way too fast for street use. Dont get me wrong, I like it, but damn. Speaking of, I really need to mount my radar detector in this one.

Um, track times don't lie and Mustangs do well on the track. Personally I like bigger sports cars. Makes me feel a bit safer.

You should at least test drive a GR86 or BRZ IMO. I like my Fiesta ST - too bad Ford stopped making them.

A few cars back, I had a 135I Convertible with a JB4 Tune. That was a sweet car. RWD, light and nimble, but fast as S**T... rode well too, and back seat more usable than my Mustang. I would highly recommend one! Love my Mustang though, and wish I had a bigger garage...
