I tried with a huge C clamp and a 1-1/4" socket over the bolt head. I was unable to get the top bolt out. I hit the lower nut with a few hard blows with a normal sized hammer (with nut flipped over) it budged a little so I tried the big C clamp and got that one out. The upper will not move. I am going to rent the press tool. The right tool for this job. I'm getting too old for crude force tactics.

So glad I went and got the ball joint press. Free 72 hour rental from Canadian Tire. I didn't use the spacers the tool came with. A 1-1/4" socket worked better. This was the right way to do it. I didn't like the idea of hammering my car with a sledge to get the splined bolts out.

What brand and model for future reference? Glad it worked for you.

The rental tool was made by OEM TOOLS. But there are many ball joint presses available from other manufacturers. They all look basically the same.

I found it on Amazon. For that price, it's a deal, especially for how versatile it is.
