Hi all

I have a build thread here and I've just finished the install this afternoon. But I have a strange issue. The car turns over, fires, but then instantly dies.

Video

Now my battery is/was flat, but during this work and the writing of the tune I had another car next to me and I was hooked up to its battery so I don't think we can blame my flat battery as the power was coming from the other car. But let me know if we think that actually, that could be the cause.

I've checked over what I can visually.
  • Coil packs are connected and look to be seated flush against the engine
  • Spark plugs were screwed in and then nipped/torqued to 15nm. (I replaced the OEM spark plugs with NGK LTR7IX-11 IRIDIUM NGK 6510 gapped at 0.028")
  • Checked for fuel leaks from the high/low pressure side connections to the rails. All dry.

  • Checked the connectors were fastened to all injectors.
  • Checked the Throttle body connector was attached.
TB_Connector.jpg

  • Checked the MAF connector (Also, the MAF can only go into the pipe one way as the screw holes won't line up if inserted wrong way up)
MAF_Connector.jpg

  • Visually checked the pipe from the top of the throttle body spacer back to the top of the BOV. That is connected.

  • Visually checked the two (PCV?) lines back into the intake.

When it fires, you can smell petrol coming out the back of the exhaust so it seems to be dumping fuel in OK but not sparking to ignite it? I think the wiring for the BAP is connected, it can only really go one way.

@Wengerd Performance is trying to help me. The inital tune didn't work and now I've tried a cut down tune, both exhibt the same starting behaviour. The cut down tune is just calibrated for LU47 injectors with MAF settings. Nothing else.

I'm OK at following instructions but if anyone asks to troubleshoot I'll be a bit useless unless I can be directed (go here, do that, check for this by doing XYZ). So please be gentle with me. @beefcake do your guys have any ideas what might be amiss here?

Any ideas? I followed the instructions to the letter and took my time as well, this is so frustrating. 😟

Thanks.

I've even made sure the check valve in the PCV hose that you have to put together is closest, as per the instructions, to the valve cover. Which it is. Can just make out the grey check valve underneath in these pics.

Seems strange to have so much fuel in the exhaust, like it's flooded. Are the plugs flooded too? If so, I'd pull the pump power and turn the engine over a while to dry out those cylinders. Too much gas can be a problem too. Good luck. Keep swing at it. If you get frustrated, take a break, relax and go over it in your head. You'll figure it out. Let us know how it goes.

There is a step to rotate two of the injectors. I don't know why, as the lu47 injectors look identical to the oem ones I removed. Same size and shape. I was able to disregard the step about using spacers because of this, then it says if they are not clipped right however that it might not fit properly.

I could take the fuel rail off, rotate the two injectors back to normal and refit. In case as you say, it's not down properly and sucking in air. The install guide states "Failure to do so may result in improper fuel injector fitment for these 2x injectors."

The fuel rail did seem to push down OK and it bolted down OK. But you never know.

I can take a spark plug out and check. Would it be obvious if flooded?

Does the car pull any DTC's ? I had the same issue with my Odin with the base tune and had been able to address that with my tuner. So probably it's tune related!

Thanks. Sadly I ran DTC on the TDN app and it said 0 errors returned. I'm hoping it's a simple tune issue before I start pulling bits apart. The first time it happened I ran data logging and sent that file to Wengerd. Not sure if it held anything worthwhile.

If you pull a plug and it's wet looking, it'll be obvious. If it's dry, maybe only one or two cylinders are getting fuel. I don't think it's possible to cross the injectors wiring or coil plugs because the wire length won't reach but worth a look.

How many times did you try to turn it over?

Yes the maf can only go in one way but did you check to see if the housing is backwards?
I can check. Flow arrow pointing towards throttle body yeah?

Yey all fixed. Maf housing was wrong way round. Flow arrow was pointing away from throttle body! Changed it round, fired up perfectly. 😁

Reloaded the original tune from wengerd and sent my data log on.

Thank god for that!

Cheers all.

good job giving the info of what you'd fitted and how and great job with the community solving the problem

Totally agree, I would have been stumped without the awesome help.

I do have one more conundrum if anyone has any ideas lol. I have no heat from the heater. Car gets up to temp nicely, I can see fluid circulating into the coolant tank, levels are good, but no heat.

I did hear gurgling when I was sitting in the driver seat fiddling with the heater controls, but even at max (30ºC) it is cold. I'm guessing an air pocket in the heater exchange? But, how does one clear it? 🤔 Will it clear itself?

Thanks.
