Fun thread with lotsa good info :like:

Definitely hook up a scanner and Forscan. Should tell you a good amount of what's going on with the vehicle.

Here are some pics of the transmission looking from the drivers side. I don’t see anything apparent with etching. Let me know if I’m looking in the right area, I’m going to check the other side later tonight.

I also did confirm that I he VIN I have does appear in the “About SYNC” section on the screen in the car so I assume that is reading the one from the ECU

Well, that's definitely the spot where mine is. Maybe it's something to do with different years? Or maybe it's a replacement engine? Have you popped the coil cover to see if it's a gen 1 or gen 2?
Well this cars mystery keeps growing… if I am reading this sticker under the coil cover correctly, this is a Gen 2 engine?

Yes, you had an engine replacement. Go get an oasis report to see the details. A lot of 17s had oil consumption issues. Maybe that was the reason.

This is what the engine block etching looks like.

The trans looks the same.

Thank you! Yeah I don’t see that anywhere on the transmission. Just so odd for someone to go to that length to remove all identifying marks.

I had a call today with the TX DOT and they told me they do NOT place a replacement VIN plate in the windshield, rather it’s placed in the door. So with that I am not quite sure why I am even going through all the paperwork to get a sticker when I know the vin number. So I figure I might just get one made with the VIN number on it and put it in there before I get a new windshield. Would anyone be willing to send me a picture of what their VIN plate on the windshield looks like but just blur your vin out? I would like it to look as factory as possible, just not sure if ford did any fancy design around the vin number

If the vin is missing from all the usual places how do you know what it actually is? I must have missed it in the thread somewhere.

At the auction I bought it from, they had the VIN for it. VIN is still on the auction sticker on the windshield with the claim number from the insurance company. My insurance company verified with the previous company that the car was indeed the one they auctioned off and the VIN matched their loss claim. Also ran VIN reports and they match with a stolen vehicle that was recovered. Also the VIN shows in the SYNC settings in the car. When I called Ford Performance, they gave me vehicle details about the car such as color/stripe combo that matches so I really haven’t found a reason to not believe this is not the actual VIN

As stated, forscan would show (a) VIN. I dont think someone would bother to swap out the pcm to cover their tracks.

Yes ordered the cable for the forscan so I’ll be sure to post the results and also going to the dealer on Saturday to see if they can run an OASIS report

I use a Bluetooth OBD reader. As for an OASIS, aby Ford dealership can generate the report based on the VIN. That may be your problem because your car has no VIN. If you have all the documentation from Ford and insurance, that might be good enough for them to run a report.

No bought it at an auction straight from the insurance company. I don’t know why the insurance company would cut the vin out if it was a theft recovery? Ultimately as long as I can insure it and register it I’ll be happy. I bought this car to work on and have fun with my son as he grows up so I have absolutely no plans of ever selling it. Here is a pic of the windshield where they cut the vin.

I think the door is messed up because I suspect that’s how they broke in but not quite sure.
Florida wouldn't allow that registration, I don't think. They verify VINs in person. Did they remove the door sticker too?

Just curious, what did this car cost? My thoughts are because a car like this would be a great dedicated track car. I'd tear it down to nothing like @honeybadger did. A lot of the salvage cars are either flooded or wrecked. I never considered a stolen car with VINs removed would qualify as a salvage car. With a new engine, it would be a great start for a dedicated track car.

I mentioned earlier but after auction fees and shipping, I paid a little less than $29k for it.

Also had a friend who was able to hook up a OBD reader and confirmed the VIN I have is what is showing in the ECU.

Also was able to obtain an OASIS report and it confirmed the engine was replaced in August 2021 by a Ford Dealer.

I am going to cal Ford Performance later today to see if they will stamp my chassis plate. I’ll let you know how it goes!
