It's a real disappointment that this had nothing to do with the S650 Mustang. First of all: why is it that whenever Ford does the Shelby Mustangs for their stock cars, they always give it a regular pony badge instead of the cobra logo? And second, this look nothing like a GT500. They should just go back to letting carmakers build their own car bodies again instead of the cookie-cutter body that NASCAR builds.

The manufacturers do design the cars for the most part but it still has to be within nascar regulations.

Yes. I just wish that car manufacturers could be allowed to use the same car bodies as their production-spec models. It's a little cliche from what I've read, but the fact that they can't do that sort of defeats the whole purpose of a "stock" car. 🤔

it looks like 6g shelby gt500 not 7g mustang i think we have been had!!
It hasn't been that unusual in the past for a new Mustang shape to look like the previous Shelby Mustang.

2013 Mustangs looked a lot like the 2010 GT500, for example.

Ain't Nothin Stock About A StockCar. Never Has And Never Will Be
Never has been is not true. They were "stock" cars with a modified "stock" motor and a roll bar and a few safety mods through the 70's. That is why we had the Boss 429 so that motor could be used in Nascar.

In the 80's they started using fully caged chassis but had to use the original sheet metal from the "stock" car. Factories would ship them what they called bodies in white. They also went to a set cubic inch motor. At that time, the manufactures were still making cars like the Monte Carlo "Aero" Coupe and sell them to the public to make the body eligible for Nascar. Chevy did this to compete with the much more aerodynamic Thunderbird.

Wasn't till the 90's that they started using what they called aero bodies to try to make all of the brands equally competitive. Basically everyone had the same sheet metal with stickers to make it look like one brand or the other. Until than, during some years one brand would sweep the field due to a new "stock" body having an aero advantage. That is when they were no longer any type of "stock" car and win on Sunday sell on Monday really no longer played a role.

For 2022, this is an attempt to make them look stock again while keeping the equally competitive on the track. However, like you and everyone is saying, they still are nowhere near stock.
