New Competition for the Mustang

I'm reallly interested that for once the Mustang has different competitors at different price points and engine sizes. I'll guess the 2.3L will receive 315hp and be rated at 34 mpgs. I consider the 2.3L to be a performance Mustang, in a different way than the GT of course, more about handling and perfect for autocross. It's great because the V6 was never about that. The GT will still have its sights on the other pony cars as usual and aspire to take on the M3/M4.

As for the 4 banger, has anyone heard the BRZ/FRS twins will be getting turbos? Makes it even more of a natural competitor with the EB4. I think we'll see owners of the 4 banger aggressively tuning it and putting on bigger turbos trying to squeeze out 400 or more hp's out of the car.

How do you guys think it will stack up against the BRZ?

If/when the GT86 twins ever get factory turbos I'd bet it would price them way above what a base Ecoboost would be off the showroom floor. That would be something the small sportscar fans would have to be aware of.

'Way above"? I think they will be priced about the same. The current GT86 offerings are under $30k. I can't see them trying for $10k more for a 60HP and weight bump.

Their current cars are priced at what a base V6 is now, so unless the Ecoboost is priced significantly above the current base Mustang then any turbo'd special edition GT86 model will likely start well over $30,000 or close to what a Mustang GT will be. So they will have a heavy price competition with the Ecoboost Mustang and a serious performance handicap compared to the Mustang GT.

I'm thinking about the Subaru STI as a price comparison to give me an idea.

The more I think about it the smarter I think Ford is for going the boosted 4 route with Mustang. Chevy is really stupid not to consider this, if this is true: http://www.mustang6g.com/forums/showthread.php?t=948

The I4 Mustang will be frequently compared against the GT86 and benefit greatly from cross shoppers of those offerings. This strategy makes perfect sense instead of trying to carve its own niche with an all new smaller RWD coupe that some want to see Ford produce. This leverages on the Mustang's brand recognition and there's no better car to showcase the performance capabilities of Ecoboost than the pony car.

It's a whole other world for the Lil' Mustang. I'd say it is in underdog in this class but I am really excited now. Some major competition but Ford has a great drivetrain and looks like a lightweight package. The Twins will get Turbo'd for sure.

If the Ecoboost comes in near the price of the current GT86 twins but matches the performance of their turbo variants it will be a huge win.

At 200hp, the gt86 is >100hp down from the EB4. Unless I missed something, the STI brz is only slightly more powerful and Subaru does not want the 86 to outshine the STI the same way Porsche doesn't want the cayman to outshine the 911.

I'd love to see a factory turbo 86 but I don't see it making 300hp. Either way the EB4 might be the tuner car to have. I hope its a couple hundred lbs lighter than the GT.

The new WRX has the same FA20 motor as the BRZ, just without multiport injection and with a turbo, and it's only ~270hp. But there are companies making aftermarket turbos and superchargers that pass the 300hp with tuning. And I didn't think Subaru had released what the BRZ STI would have.

Also, it may be down 100hp from the EB4, but it also weighs less than 2800lbs as is. That's a light car.

I thought the brz was the only car w.the fa20 while the wrx had a lower compression motor?

The brz sti isn't out yet. While the brz is lighter and fast on track, I'm interested to see how the EB4 compares.

I think the monthly sales of the mustang now equal a years worth of BRZ sales.

Pretty much the same for the genesis coupe.

The new mustang is stunning.

Turbo four seems cool too although the 5 liter v8 is hard to pass up on.
