It’s a new article, but who knows exactly what they’re referring to…have to read the patent to be sure but they reference the s650
I mean that is a DCT, an electrically operated manual that alternates gears between clutches.

Seems to my limited brain capacity they want to get rid of the clutch pedal and have it incorporated into the shifter.

Two threads on this already.

By the way, the patent protects the idea. Most never make it past that stage. This one, who knows.
Thanks for posting these.

I actually have three US patents and you are correct, many never make it beyond the concept/prototype especially when they involve the motor vehicle domain, as manufacturers don’t like paying for someone else’s IP outside of their world and would rather share it amongst themselves and often do.

From what I understood, it's not a DCT, it's a normal manual trans with an automated clutch. There are sensors in the shifter that senses when you want to shift and it will release the clutch for you. Ford also plans on an override feature and also plans on keeping the 3rd pedal.

It's the best of both worlds, the driver stays engaged because he has to manually shift gears but doesn't have to operate the third pedal except when he wants.

Maybe a good thing for someone that needs a hip or knee replacement. Otherwise I'd say it's either DCT or traditional manual.

It's sort of the same concept as the auto rev-match in our cars. When the shifter moves to a gate, 3rd, 4th, etc the electronics immed sends signal to disengage the clutch and 'lines up' the synchros and completes the shift.

I like to disassemble things.
Ford obtains a shitload of patents. Quite a few we never see in action. This one...eh, we'll find out soon enough. At this point I'm a big fan of the DCT that was developed for the GT500. Hopefully the S650 isn't a letdown and has something up its sleeve that brushes government emasculation to the side with technologies such as this. We shall see.
