Recently I have made an effort to reduce the weight of my track car, a GT350R. I have been running with the OEM lead acid battery and a standard Watson DOM 4pt roll cage. The quickest and easiest weight reduction method that I have found is to substitute the OEM battery for the Antigravity ATX-20-HD. The OEM battery is about 27 pounds. The ATX-20-HD is about 5 pounds. I opted to install a battery mount provided to me by Antigravity that is billet CNC machined aluminum that probably weights about a pound. I had to custom fabricate an interface to work with the OEM battery tray because I wanted to use the OEM tray to shield the battery from the extreme heat of the engine compartment.

When my battery was delivered, I used the Ctek charger/maintainer to bring the battery up to a 100% charge. I was told by Antigravity customer service that the charger/maintainer would not be critical to purchase because the cars charging system will adequately maintain the battery.

Once I received the ATX-20-HD mount, I got to work. the things I did to accomplish installation were to attach the SAE battery terminal adapters, fabricate an adapter to interface between the battery mount and the OEM tray, and then mount the battery.

First, I mounted the SAE adapters.

Second, I fabricated an adapter to attach the battery mount to. The prototype was done in plywood. Once my design was settled upon, I used a plastic substrate.

Third, I secured the battery to the battery mount.

I didn't have a photo of the battery attached to the battery mount before being installed into the OEM battery tray, so please reference above photo to see how the battery and mount interact.

Fourth, I installed the new battery.

My car felt lighter this year. The battery never failed or gave me any electrical issues or problems. I had it on ACC power for up to 30 mins while having to run FORSCAN for other diagnostic reasons. The car was always started strong and never gave any signs of weakness. The ATX-20-HD and the battery mount that they manufacture provided a solid, secure, and reliable alternative lightweight power source that lightened my car with a simple mod that anybody can do.

Anyone who is looking to reduce the weight of their car, this is the easiest modification you can do. Anyone who is serious about weight reduction needs to start here with this project first. Zero regrets and lots of benefits. A famous race car driver drove my car and commented to me that I have a fast car. My car is essentially stock with only the battery and cage weight reduction.

Cudos to Antigravity and what they have accomplished. The ATX-20-HD is something that I will continue to use on the track when I receive my GT500CFTP.

Excellent Tom! Thanks
Will Antigravity be making all of the necessary conversion parts that you outlined in your right up in the future as a conversion kit?

In simple terms, the adapter plate I fabricated is simple. I will supply the design to them and let them decide. It is my understanding that they will.

Any chance you could make another plastic tray for those interested? I would be, I'd pay upfront too.

Its simple. It is a piece of plastic cut to size and drilled to accommodate the battery mount from Antigravity. I will provide Antigravity the dimensions and they may offer a product, but its as simple as cutting a plastic substrate and drilling holes for the mount.

Awesome info Tom! Congrats on losing the 22 or so lbs!

Could you post the dimensions for the plastic tray here? What did you use, Big Box store product?

I’ll add a link to the Parts Sticky. Good stuff:like:

You can notice a 22# weight reduction on a ~3600# car?

That seems more like placebo to me, but if you're happy with it then that's what matters.

Plus a 30# difference in the roll cage. So that's 55#. Minus the empty windshield washer fluid reservoir, that's 61#. Minus 1/4 tank of gas, that's 85#.

This is one of many steps to reduce weight. After many of the above items, it starts to become difficult. Before it gets to that point, battery replacement is the next best and easiest weight reduction method.

I just love replies like yours. Thanks for stopping by.
