First the TLDR: Universal short antenna with 3d printed base so it doesnt look funny.
Full mod story:
So before I even purchased my convertible, I hated that stupid rear antenna. Not only visually, but I wanted to add a spoiler, and it is in the way.
So the smart thing to do is to buy a $25 shorty custom antenna. There are a couple of them out there, from good reputable small businesses... but they're all about 4" long. So I ended up purchasing a cheap universal 1.2" antenna.
Of course with a cheap universal antenna, it doesnt have the large base flare for the mustang.
It looks silly.
So the smart thing to do is to buy a proper antenna.... right?
I am apparently not a smart person, because the next thing I do is to measure everything out.
Heres a good pic to identify the problem.
And here are my stupid measurements.
Base has a OD of a hundreth of a mm under 23mm, and surprisingly is round, not oval.
Hex is 14mm across exactly, about 3.5mm tall with a 10.8mm diameter nub on top that is 1.22mm tall.
measuring the whole stack, its 4.76mm above the base.
Finally, my cheap antenna has a base circle of 14.7mm
Well, lets just throw all this into Fusion 360 and make an adapter:
Cool.
This is also a good first part from my new resin printer... I only have gray resin but I print it off. Ignore the white, I flexed it a bit before curing, and apparently that discolors it a bit. Doesnt matter as it will be painted.
Awesome. checking fitment, it clicks right on. I was actually so suprised how nicely it fit first try, that I forgot to take a pic before screwing the antenna on.
Cool. Now just take it off, spray it with satin plastic paint... Reinstall and its done.
I'm happy with it. While a one piece billet one would be ideal, this fits on, seals up and looks like it came that way. Also the FM radio still works, even though I never use it.
