MUSTANG CLAIMS TITLE OF BEST-SELLING SPORTS COUPE IN THE WORLD FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR

April 17, 2019
  • Ford celebrates Mustang’s 55th anniversary today – National Mustang Day – as the world’s best-selling sports coupe of 2018 on the strength of 113,066 cars sold
  • This marks the fourth consecutive year Mustang claims the title of world’s best-selling sports coupe as well as best-selling sports car in the United States
  • Mustang’s market share in the global sports car segment is up half a point for 2018 over the previous year – to 15.4 percent – fueled in part by the hot-selling Bullitt
DEARBORN, Mich., April 17, 2019 – As Ford marks Mustang’s 55th anniversary on this National Mustang Day, enthusiasts everywhere are celebrating the world’s best-selling sports coupe for the fourth consecutive year.

From Australia to Peru, Mustang reigns as the best-selling sports coupe in the world for 2018, selling 113,066 cars, according to data from IHS Markit. 2018 not only marks the fourth straight year of Mustang’s global leadership as world’s best-selling sports coupe, but also as best-selling sports car in the United States, where Ford sold 75,842 Mustangs last year.

“We broke the mold when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago,” said Jim Farley, Ford president, global markets. “Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair and the joy of driving like Mustang; it’s an icon. The roar of its V8 on a spring day, there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sports coupe in the world.”

Mustang was available for purchase in 146 countries in 2018, based on worldwide Ford sales data. More than 500,000 sixth-generation Mustangs have been sold worldwide since 2015, with the pony picking up an additional half point of global share last year to capture 15.4 percent of the segment. This was fueled in part by the new Mustang Bullitt, which exceeded global sales forecasts by 25 percent.

Global sales data are based on IHS Markit 2018 total new vehicle registrations for all sports car segments. U.S. sales are based on 2018 industry reported sales.

That's every year since the S550 was released. That's pretty substantial to say the least.

Pretty impressive. Interesting how they say the Bullitt exceeded global sales forecasts y 25% when availability outside N/A in restricted. Although I expect 2020 Bullitt numbers to be down quit a bit, as everyone who "had to have" the car when it was announced, were in line first, and already have one.

"More than 500,000 sixth-generation Mustangs have been sold worldwide since 2015"

And only 506 of those were Grabber Blue GT Convertibles, and mine is one of them. Whoooo.

Have heard no talk of a 55th Anniversary one? Seems they do them every 5 years (or 6 as the 45th was a 2009, and 50th was a 2015). Is there one coming? Even just badges?

Did they have a 45th Anniversary? I would not expect anything until 60th.

Now if Ford would offer:
3.5TT
5.2 CPC
7.3 N/A
They'd bury the Competition Forever.

I'm with you there.......I was hoping for something today :(

OK, the 35th/40th/45th were little more than a fender badge, but it was something

Exactly, not expecting a major extra model or something, but a little extra for badges and maybe seat logos. Other than those, the 50th had unique corral pony grill, chrome accents and unique wheels (and the premier seats and soft touch doors).

I'd love to know how many of my spec are out there (black accent velocity blue GT w/showstopper). Where did you get that number?
Marti Report. I don't think he'll have that for 2018/2019 cars yet.

I think it's fascinating to know all these kinds of numbers, although apparently some people on here think it's stupid. My car is one of 506 out of 500,000+ 6th gen Mustangs made, I think that's cool to know, even if ultimately it doesn't mean my car is worth more than any other 6th gen. I get lots of comments about the color and about it being a convertible. People have never seen the color, or never seen it in a convertible, etc. Now I know why. I live in South Florida and I ordered the car, sight unseen, from a dealer in Missouri 1300 miles away because it's so rare there wasn't one being sold in Florida.

There are a couple of threads about this:

This would have been a great time to announce the 850hp GT500, with a 925hp KR version :lipssealed:

If they don't do you a 55th badge, after a while you might find a keychain you could enlist, as I did for the 45th on my 2009 (same design as this, just keychain size. it's on the right side of the trunk lid):
