MotorTrend 2019 Best Driver's Car GT350 vs 911S

Did you guys watch the initial film from MotorTrend on the GT350 vs. the 911S? Randy Pobst ran both cars on Laguna Seca. The 911S doesn't have the "R compound" tires like the regular GT350 has now.

I thought it was interesting, Randy said that the GT350 is about 1 second faster around Laguna Seca than the Camaro SS 1LE. That would be the current GT350 with the Cup 2 tires.

One thing Randy has said in the last few reviews of the GT350 is that it has too much mid-corner understeer. This is something I have complained about a little in the past. It was mostly not accepted on this board, was the way I remember it. I'm not calling you guys biased or anything, but I think we all really like the GT350.

Anyway, not that I necessarily need any confirmation of my thoughts on the GT350, but I did enjoy that part of the film. I think it also supports the fact that many of you have gone to a square setup (wider front tires) which would help to reduce understeer.

I like the looks, and the sound is ok at high revs.

What I don't like is the lack of torque and how it is excessively hooked up. They are just a little bland and boring on the street. And too much money. I'm sure I'd have one and track it if I had enough dough. I just can't justify the cost. And the used ones don't go down in value enough to be worth it for me.

not a huge porsche fan myself but i love the gt2 rs look. crikey that car looks good to me.

Yep, Motor Trend on Demand. I think the subscription is well worth it for any car guy. Their production value has continued to get better plus all the older shows are still available. Lots of good content in my opinion.

Okay it's modified but the frequency principles are still the same as the factory system.

Count me in the “I don’t like the sound” group. Sounds like a bunch mad hornets in a tin can, not to my liking. I like the sound of my stock Mustang over any Porsche. I never liked the high pitch “screamer” exhaust.

Oh, and the cars in the "competition" that are actually close in price to the GT350:
Toyota Zupra ran a 1:40.57 - almost 4 seconds slower than the GT350.
The BMW M2 competition ran 1:40.83 - exactly 4 seconds slower than the GT350.

I like and own both cars.

Obviously, I think the GT350 is the best Mustang ever made, and I've owned a bunch of Fox-body, SN95's, and a S197's (all of them were good with no failures -- just DIY maintenance).

I own a 2014 Porsche 911 (the 991.1), and have owned the 997.1 (2006), and a 1996 993. The Porsche cars are priced higher and service parts are higher. They are difficult to work on for a shade tree mechanic like me.

The interior of the Porsche is finished nicer (it should be), and the car is around 700 pounds lighter (991 vs. GT350). The Mustang has always had better HP and torque.

I agree that a square setup for the track will aid the 350.... but even w/o, we all know by now it can still perform quite well at a high level. Randy as a pro can obviously elicit the smallest details to the Nth degree (in regards to what a car needs improvement of) on the track.

I’m biased to both types of cars.... and I have a reason to be because frankly they’re both equally amazing and high performing yet in different ways. As for sound, I love my GT350R’s exhaust at idle and lower speeds.... but at higher speeds and WOT, my GT3’s racecar-like sounds give me as many goosebumps as the R’s. The GT3 from 7,000 to its 9,000 rpm redline sounds is absolutely and blissfully out of this world.

IMO the best combinations is to pair up (or triple up) any Porsche 911 variant to any GT350 variant. Win-Win (or Win-Win-Win in my experience) situation....

We also know the GT350 or GT350R is great looking but I also think the GT3 is simply quite stunning....

You know whats funny, I installed the X51 headers, Borla mufflers and AWE 200cpi cats on my PCar with the car backed up on phone books as my buddy was using my floor jack and stands for a project he was working on. It took only a 7mm, 22mm and a 13mm socket and associated wrenches.
