I've owned both automatic and manual GTs and the manual lets a lot more noise into the car through the transmission shifter area.
I can clearly hear the starter motor more than the automatic.
Has anyone tried to sound deadening the manual shifter area?

Yes, people have. Dynamat in that area helps (remove console).

You may also go to a store that sells MLV (Mass Loaded Vinyl). This BLOCKS sound. Dynamat is a CLD (Constrained Layer Damper) - it absorbs vibration, not sound (though a lot of sound is transmitted/even amplified by vibration). MLV will have the most effect, but it is very expensive and hard to get in small amounts. You should put some closed cell foam (CFF) in-between the metal of the car and the MLV because MLV works best with that space and MLV itself is prone to making noise since it's a stiff rubbery material (i.e., it can transmit vibration to a degree).

Home Depot sells a "cheaper" version of MLV in their flooring section - it's a role of black stuff. I use that in car audio applications fairly often. Not as good as full on audio-grade MLV but it does work wonders nonetheless at BLOCKING airborne noise.

Barton includes it with their shifters.
