Hey guys,

This is driving me crazy. I've definitely heard these tires come in run-flat and non run-flat versions, but when I called Michelin directly they told me it's only a run-flat tire.

It matters because all of the feedback I've seen on this tire tells me its outstanding for the cooler temps, but I don't know which version they owned.

I was in a tossup between the as3+ and dws 06 when I decided on the as3+.

Thanks

I have had both the A/S3+ and the DWS-06 on my BMWs, both non-runflat. I preferred the A/S3+.

I think the A/S4 is out, so you might want to get those instead. And yes, the ultra great majority of people get the non-RF version (including myself, on my ex-M3 V8), so not sure what the Michelin guy you talked to was smoking.

Thanks - both of you. I was going insane over this discrepancy, further fueled by a local tire shop confirming what Michelin told me.

I'm looking for 325/30/19 and 285/35/19, would either of you know the non run-flat skus on the as3+ out of curiosity?

I'll look into the A/S4 as well - since that should be newer technology.

Thanks again

just look at tirerack. Why on earth are you going 325 on teh rears? That'll bite hard in cold/snow. taller and narrow is the key.

Wait a second .... I didn't realize tirerack lists the A/S 3+ separately per speed rating / ZP.

I found this, but widest is 285: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+Sport+A/S+3++(W-+or+Y-Speed+Rated)

To answer your width question - I don't plan on driving in the snow. I can work remotely as well, so it's not a top priority. I am interested in something that can grip cold and dry streets, and cold and wet streets. Is this tire going to kill me in a 325 for either of those conditions?

One more question - I have 10" wide fronts and 11" wide rears. Michelin states the 285/35 will fit both rims. Are there any cons to running 285s all around, but on staggered rims? I'm only asking because maybe I can't get a wider tire.

They used to, anyway - I have four in my garage right now. PM me if you'd be interested in a set of four on 19X10" MRR M600s.

If you're not going to drive on snow or ice, the A/S 3+ will do well for you, but that does seem awfully wide. If you do see being on snow or ice, the A/S 3+ is fair to good, but nothing to write home about.

FWIW, I always go with a separate winter set on its own wheels. Sand and salt can do a real number on your wheels, not to mention giving the least experienced tech at your tire shop the opportunity to muck up your wheels twice a year swapping tires over.

For my winter set, I've got a square set of 245/45R19 Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 tires on 19x9 Ford performance Boss 302 wheels. The wheels did add $1150 to the order, but it gives me a setup I can do in my driveway without worrying about my OEM summer wheels. The Pilot Alpin 5 tires did very well during last year's dry winter. I never had them in snow, but they were fine on dry, wet, and occasionally ice patches.

How do the Alpins handle from a dig? Understood theyre not intended for that purpose, but am curious!

Thanks for your insight as well. Theoretically, I could keep these rims on for the winter, and if they get messed up, buy a new set in the summer!

I'll confess I never tried too hard, as traditionally winter tires have a tendency to shred under a hard load. But, I don't recall ever wishing I had more pull coming off a light.

All good, appreciate it!

I had my mind set on the A/S 3+ (looked for A/S 4 but didn't find much. Not overly concerned, but could be nice if anybody had a link), so I ended up going with 265/35 and 285/30. I'll have them installed tomorrow.

I'll give some feedback - directly compare the PS4S vs A/S 3+.

Thanks all - you helped me get what I wanted!

That size is going to have your front tire about a half-inch taller than your rear tire, if that matters to you. Some people on here, tend to be bothered if their fronts are taller than the rears.
265/35R19 = 26.3 diameter... 285/30R19 = 25.7 diameter.

Thanks for looking out. What is the reason for people being bothered by that?

This was what I chose because of the following:

1. I wanted the widest tire I could find on the rear (285)
2. 255 would be a stretch on the front
3. 285/35 is unavailable
4. 265/35 was the closest in height to 285/30

Maybe I could have matched closer with a 275 in the rear (edit: however, then 275 might be a stretch on 11")

Edit 2: Got them installed today. The 285s are slightly stretched 265s fit well up front

Edit 3: Just like the PS4S, the A/S 3+ are slippery when new. I cant pull from a dig and hard shifts get sketchy with rear end feeling loose. I dont even have 100 miles on them yet, so im confident grip will skyrocket soon

FYI, be mindful that the AS3+ is a loud tire. Road noise gets transferred into the cabin and the tire itself makes a humming sound. If those things dont bother you, this tire is really good for spirited driving.

To add another data point, I just got a set of AS4. Drove 1500 miles in the last week, mostly highway, with no noticeable road noise at all. The only "road noise" I heard was the sound reflected from the cars I passed. Significant improvement over the stock Pirelli's.
