Although I am not a Shelby owner I have a great reverence for Carroll and his cars. To that I got to meet and talk to the man who helped Carroll start it all. The project manager for the GT350 was Chuck Cantwell. He was at the Mustang Owners Museum on Friday as part of our celebration of National Mustang Week. He spoke to the large group of members at the event and recalled a number of great stories from the beginning of the GT350 saga. In addition the famous GT350 #003 was on display. A great day for Shelby owners and want to be Shelby owners.

By the way, just wanted to add a small story that happen after the event.

Chuck was signing autographs after his talk. He was also signing copies of his book. I forgot to buy one from the Museum not knowing the it is now out of print. I asked the owner of the museum if he happened to have an extra and, unfortunately, the answer was no. Now Chuck looks at me and says he has one he can sell me. Of course I jump on the opportunity. I met up with Chick back at our hotel and not only got the book but was able to spend some one on one time with him. What an incredible gentleman and memories I will never forget.

What a great story and proof dreams do come true.

My dream car is a 66 SC 427 Cobra. My dad bought a new 64 1/2 mustang when I was 8 years old and I went with him to pick it up from Kelly Ford in Melbourne Florida. It was a bright orange 289 auto with white interior. There was a 64 289 AC Cobra on a pedestal in the showroom in blue with white racing stripes, I begged my dad to buy it to no avail. He said we could not fit the family in it. LOL

It was only 10,000 dollars back then which was lots of money considering the mustang was only 2100 dollars, but what an investment it would have been.

Well I cannot get you a SC427 but I can show you a very, very cool one. The owner of the River Snake Cobra, Sam Prock, was there as well but I didn't hear him speak.

Did 003 have the IRS rear ?
Fun fact: These Mustangs had the worlds first computer aided designed suspensions.

Not 100% sure. I doubt it as this was the promotional car and not setup originally setup for racing.

Excellent story.
I'm a big fan of Carrol Shelby as well.
He was quite an interesting man, along with the gentleman you got to spend time with.
Thanks for sharing! 👍

I’d like to see what code they did in 1965 for suspension design…tapes and running on a Univac or IBM 340 or something.
