I recall I removed one bolt and then pivoted the caliper away from the rotor.

The Z23 did not have the small holes for the spreader spring so I just skipped replacing those.

Note that if you have to open the caliper because the new pads are thicker, you will need that winder tool. eBay has good prices on that kit and some even come with S hooks for hanging the heavy front caliper onto the coil spring.

A C-clamp works well has a spreader tool, and you might already have one.

In my post #46 I was referring to the rear brakes only. A winder tool is needed there.

For the front I use a dual plate ratchet style spreader. Works great. About $20 on ebay.

Wasn't thinking about the Brembo fronts when I suggested a C-clamp. So yes, GTP's dual plate spreader is the way to go. Unfortunately, most dual plate spreaders look to require removal of the caliper (somewhat defeating the purpose of the non-floating caliper with quick change pads). I did find the one pictured below. Its problem is that it cannot cover all 6 pistons without adding bigger plates. I wonder if it can spread the old pads, from the portion of pads that sticks above the rotors, far enough to get the spreader plates all the way in?

Keep the old pads in and use the spreader. Easy peasy.

You can just catch the plate on the upper pin holes and it will compress the pistons.

Which spreader is everyone using for the front to change pads leaving caliper on?

I should be able to use a c clamp for the rear.

My car only has 1700 miles so i dont need to spread them much.

C clamp will not work on rear. You have to twist the piston.

I haven't purchased a spreader yet, but will probably buy this. Looks like it will do the job without breaking the bank. Also, doesn't require removing the caliper.

I don't yet know what's needed to wind back in the rear pistons, but the correct tool should be in this kit.

That spreader will probably work fine between one pair of pistons at a time. The other 4 may want to move out a little but eventually they can all be pushed to the bottom.

In fact that also might serve me well at the track since I would not need to remove the caliper for a pad change.

The ratchet style spreader is from "5 Bananas". Does all 6 Pistons simultaneously. Just a little tricky getting it aligned and started at the right spacing. Hard to explain.

As for that rear kit, the pins on the tool itself are perfectly spaced for all Ford rear brakes. I think you can buy just the tool without any adapter plates even cheaper. It will work.

Swapped out the fronts today and the braking is much better for casual driving. The squeal is still there so im guessing its coming from the rear. Ill do those next week.
