What happens when you lift off / brake at high speed on a curve. What's the bet that the kid came around the curve, saw the cop's lights on the other side, and overreacted by trying to shed all the speed before the cop noticed?



Look at the video at 0:04 in. BMW M3 going sideways, BMW 7 on the side, and the luckiest BMW Z in the world managing to miss the whole show.

Also, kudos to the cop for checking on the 7's driver (effectively an innocent bystander) before going to the driver of the M3.

I think it’s just instinct to flee an imminent threat. Probably less than a second to decide on what to do. And his view is not the same as the dash cam we get.

Edit: I watched it again, looks like he notices something is going on at the 2 second mark and the cars are colliding by the 4 second mark and it’s nearly done by the 5 second mark.

There was crash in NY back in Dec 2022 that made the news then; some 16 year old who was also driving like a nut at a high rate of speed in a new BMW M5 and crashed head on into an off duty Sergeant who was killed…. The dash cam vid of that accident is just as bad as the VA one…

I first saw the video on BBC yesterday. The phrase "By the Grace of God" seems apt.

It's amazing anyone could survive such an event.

At a certain mark, the policeman/trooper appears to place his hand on the careening BMW.

The person in the car initially pulled over probably has a long recovery ahead.

I agree with the OP: the BMW probably saw the lights, freaked, lifted and/or hit the brakes, then losing control.

Looks like s clear case of a driver trying to use a lot of pedal and a lot of steering wheel at the same time. Not a good plan.
