I work in the Service dept at a Ford dealer so I have easy access to the Ford cataloging and this one is the first listed - it’s the performance version.

Thanks for the clarification.

So there must be internal differences with the "Performance" version vs. the standard.

FL2121B12 looks longer than the FL500S. More filter surface area?

I figured the same and wondered what kind of filter media and the beta rating?

Why, he had it right all along. It took 9 posts here before the truth of that was shown.
Very true.. I was too quick. Innocent until proven guilty..

I like to disassemble things.
Check the motorcraft OEP Brochure Message on FMC from 12/1. According to that guide FL2121B12 crosses to FL500, so that filter will work
Crushed it, as always.

Motorcraft oil filter FL-2121-B12 is for a 2016 and 2017 Cadillac ATS, not a Ford Mustang. You need to stick with FL-500S filters for V8/V6 S550 Mustangs and for an ecoboost the filter is FL-910S.
rubbish. If it threads on, is the right diameter (so the flange seals) and has approx same volume and backflow protection, pretty much any filter will work.

My camaro ran FP filters the live long day.

I know in BMW world, part numbers change constantly, usually because of a supplier or design change, so this would not surprise me in the slightest. I would assume even the worst parts counter person could look up a simple part like an oil filter. Gotta be one of the most common things they look up. Perhaps @LevittownFordParts can chime in with some info?
Here's what I show

OE# AA5Z-6714-A
Motorcraft # FL500S

Either will work. Not sure where the others numbers came from.

Snapped some pics for you guys just in case you were curious
the 'new' one has more threads and despite the recess has more thread engagement I should think. Drain back absolute max flow will be superior on the new one just from a square inch perspective. The amount and quality of the filter material is anyone's guess without dissection.

Just eyeballing it the 500 is a piece of crap compared to the new one.

When I did my first old change on the Mustang GT, I was surprised how small the OEM filter was. The new style looks like it is actually meant for use on a V8 engine.
