I think they are important bits but can see how the numbers might be used in different manners.
He is doing an average and glossing over the fast charging station energy requirements.

He is using the same argument and statistics Gregs24 used on me when I brought up total power needed in the other thread.

From my perspective, it was a numbers exercise. It was to confirm how much gasoline we are using now, what the electrical equivalent is, how much capacity is in the system, and what it would take to generate the difference.

It was not an exercise in distribution, how many people could charge at any one time or user requirements. I do highlight the difficulties in how the distribution system will have to be upgraded, in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering article towards the end of my previous posts.

I was looking at energy generation only. Nothing was glossed over. No slight of hand. No agendas.

Hello; Even using your assumed efficiency of 25% there will be a need for an additional 3,285 GWh of electrical generation to replace only gasoline in passenger cars if i read your post correctly.

if I divide the 11.4 GWh we currently generate into the 3,285 GWh extra needed that gives over 288 times more daily electricity generated than is currently being done.

I admit to having selected only a few bits from the post. I think they are important bits but can see how the numbers might be used in different manners.
That is correct. 3,285 GWh of electrical power, daily, or an average of 136 GWh an hour. The US grid generated 4.1 TWh of electrical power throughout all of 2023. We use an equivalent of 3.2 TWh of electricity, in gasoline, daily.

The existing grid can produce 31.2 GWh of power a day, if all stations were operating at 100%, 24/7/365. But this isn't realistic. There will be downtime for maintenance and failures. And power companies will only generate enough to cover the existing load.

The 2023 average daily production was 11.4 GWh. The number will vary, day-to-day, due to seasonal changes, maintenance, outages, etc. One of the sources is a link to a real-time monitor. When I last looked at it, the US load was 450,000 MWh, which average to 10.8 GWh for that day, which would be just shy of 4 TWh of power for the year. There's historical data, so you can look at any previous date.

I used a number of 3285/24, or 136GWh of new, hourly need. While the current grid might support some of that, I didn't consider how much. I looked towards 136 GWh of generation using new stations. One of the sources cited breaks down the industry in many ways: regional generators, existing plants, new or under construction, retiring, energy type, etc.

I used the numbers in ways I felt appropriate, citing sources so readers can review those in detail.

I don't mind ripping around in an EV. The no engine/exhaust sound takes some getting used to. By that I mean the other people in the vehicle....cuz I'm doing engine sounds and shifts.

Fuel will probably be half the price it is now within a year, further dropping the want for EV's.

Hope so I paid 2.97 for 93 yesterday.

Heard some more good news that I hope comes about. Getting rid of all regulations that have not been voted on by congress.

It must be the testosterone
That's part of it probably.

When a car excites me as much as my microwave. I just come to the conclusion it's not for me.

But that could change, if one comes along that tickles the pickle I'll give it fair consideration.

It's 2024. Transitioning is all the rage these days. But, I'm old enough that I plan on playing the back 9 with the same balls i tee'd off on the first hole with.

Hello; If it were not for the ongoing attacks against ICE cars, I doubt there would be any more posts about them than there are posts about golf carts. Since no ICE sale mandates are currently looming in the near future and that manufacturers have been forced to drop ICE models the topic of EV's is very relevant.
Beining forced to drop ICE models in the sense that companies "must" have EV product to offer for sale by dates soon. As it takes years to take a vehicle from the drawing board to a showroom they "must" convert manufacturing capacity, manpower and capitol from ICE to EV.

That few want an EV and the overall costs are too high fits into a discussion. Those who now own an EV and like them got a much better deal on the backs of us who have no interest in one. Other people's monies (taxpayers eventually) have picked up a large percentage of the cost for EV owners. Even so the cost of an EV has been higher than a similar ICE for some time.

So, if times were at all normal EV talk would be scarce on these pages. Same as for the auto magazine subscriptions I allowed to expire. The car rags subverted themselves for EV's to the extent I was no longer willing to plunk down my money.

I wouldn't call an Audi a good "bang for the buck." Yes, nice luxury car.... But Audi also makes some of the best and amazing all wheel drive luxury sedans/coupes ever made. Buy one of those while you still can.... BTW, EVs are going on the decline. Toyota can sit back and smugly observe that hybrid-electric (and PHEV) are the future.... EVs are not. The infrastructure doesn't exists on the planet and for at least 70% of the world's population will NEVER exist adequately to support billions of electric cars. NEVER. We will be using oil and gas for the next 100 years. Minimum.

Agree with all except oil and gas for next 100 years. It's true to the idea but it will gradually be reduced to a fraction of 100%.
