Hello Folks!!

Back in 2016 I got into a GT350. It was an amazing car but needed 2 engine replacments. Ford bought it back in 2017.

The GT350 was replaced with a 2017 C7Zo6. It is about to roll 100,000 miles and is up for sale. Used car prices are nuts and I don't want to have to worry about replacing the clutch, supercharger and anything else that might go wrong with a high milage Corvette. it has been an amazing car but time to unload and get into something else.

No question I would get back into a GT350 but I had 2 engines that needed replacing after only 12,000 total miles. No way I am going to own another one out of warranty that might need a 25,000 long block in the future.

This brings me to the Mach 1. It is a compromise of sorts. The manual 6 speed Tremec transmission is the reason I am looking at the Mach 1 over the standard GT. Only interest in manual transmission. How has reliability on these been? Looking through this forum the engine seems to be well sorted. Last I was on GT mustangs were suffering from the BBQ tick that Ford dismissed as normal. Was there any changes with that or does the Mach 1 have the same issue? Is it good to run up hard miles at the same rate as my Corvette? The Corvette has been solid except for melting catalytic converters and 16 sets of tires. Americas tire local branch manager and I exchange Christmas cards. Every time I see him it is $2000.

Another thing I worry about is ground clearance. the GT350 would scrape constantly on the back road loop I like to run. The Corvette was actually better in this regard, much less bottoming out on bumps.

Great to be back on the forum.

Sammy

I have the GT350 and owned/sold a 2019 Z06. I just bought a Mach 1 so can’t say too much about it’s reliability yet, but I have heard anecdotally the bbq tick can be addressed using 5w-30 with higher boron content like Pennzoil Platinum Ultra. That is my plan, I’ll see how well it works. Ground clearance will be an issue with the front splitter from the hp package. Regular Mach 1’s seem to do just fine.

Welcome. 100k miles on the zo6 is definitely not the norm!
the Mach 1 is a basically a gt350 minus a few hundred rpm. With the HP you will have to worry about scraping. I think the bbq tick is still a “thing” but I haven’t heard it and haven’t seen anyone post up about yet, although I think it’s more associated with after the first oil change so a lot of these cars haven’t reached that point yet.

What a terrible GT350 experience, it obvious why you wouldn't want to risk that again, sorry to hear it.

As far as regular coyote equipped Mustangs, reliability is very good engine wise. This design is on its 3rd generation, and the problems with the early 1st gens were primarily in forced induction applications or bad tunes. This engine in various iterations, is also in F150s, there are hundreds of thousands of them in service between Mustangs and F150s. I'm not aware of widespread problems associated with the 3rd gen engines, which was equipped with port and direct fuel injection. To be honest I think the clock needs to run for a few more years before we can make a definitive determination on reliability of 3rd gens fuel injection systems and cylinder linings but I will stress, to my knowledge, there are no widespread problems so far.

The BBQ tick issue is explained by Ford as "inherent to the design of the pistons", but that doesn't quite hold water IMO as most don't tick, only some do. I had two 2014 GTs no ticks or oil consumption issues, both saw the track a couple of times. My friend had a 2014 with a tick no oil consumption, and Ceratec took it away immediately, and it stayed away for 20k miles before he sold, it was not ticking when sold. I drove and rode as a passenger many times in that car. Ceratec doesn't always work btw. :fingerscrossed:

Hours of reading can be done on BBQ tick, and an empirical causal determination is really hard to come by. Some ticks appear within the first oil change interval, most seem to appear right after the first oil change, yet others appear well after break in (my friend's car fell into this category). Vast majority of cars do not exhibit degradation in performance or other problems even with the tick. I did see a coupe posts claiming entire engine changes under warranty by Ford. One I remember in particular had the tick and it was determined to also have bearing problems. Was there a causal relationship to the tick? can't be sure...

Basically 5.0 Coyote reliability is a selling point, put it in the "pro" side of the column as opposed to the "con" side.

I really hope your Ford experience is better this time around.

An aftermarket shifter (Barton, MGW) will make the GT (MT82-D4) transmission feel almost identical to a Borg Warner T56 with a BMR shifter (as close to a bolt action feeling as you can get). I believe your Z had the trans related to the T56.

These shifters are $$$ to purchase and install, but well worth it. I like the Barton that retains the pull up reverse feature.

I believe it was early 2018 manual transmissions that had weaknesses. Somebody can fill in those details...

Been there and done that too. My 17 gt350 was consuming oil like hell and fear mongering on the internet got the best of me and like you would love to have another gt350 but not without warranty. Haven't noticed the bbq tick either as the car has just past the break-in point so time will tell. So far it has been an excellent compromise for me coming from a 19 GS and the 350. The piston slap was annoying to me so I am not to worried about the tick.
So far so good!!!

Came over from a 6th Gen Camaro SS to my Mach 1. Aside from paint quality, the Mustang seems to be a much more solid vehicle and considerably more engaging/fun to drive. Not that the alpha platform was bad, I’m just enjoying the Mach 1 more.

Thanks for the replies!

Well I ordered a Mach 1 at MSRP from my local dealer. $500 refundable refund. They said it is 5 or 6 months out. Confirmed they do have an allocation.

What do you all think of the build? The handling package mostly for looks. Will take the cup 2's off and mount PS4 until I break it in and line up a track day.

Is the upgraded stereo that much better than the standard unit?

Anything you would add or delete?

I did the poll for the stereo upgrade, and opted to add my own sub to the trunk. We have a similar build, good luck and welcome to the wait.

Congratulations on your order and be patient.

As far as the upgrade I think so now that I have it dialed in correctly thanks to GTP who is an audiophile specialist. Hell I just happy to be able to listen to CDs again...lol.
