How does one tell a V6 model from an Ecoboost model? What physical things on the outside tell one from the other?
Tri-Bar pony symbol on the back of the V6. Galloping Pony on the EB.

V6 will also sound better ;)

I think also that, in the right light, the intercooler on the EB is pretty easy to spot.

Brakes. If it has the the 4 piston calipers up front it's an eco pp. If it has sliding calipers it could be either, you will need to look at the rear decklid. i
The cloth seats on the Eco have horizontal stitching and the V6 are slightly different.

Lets not turn this into one of these threads, the OP asked a question

I feel like the fun potential here is going to be short lived.

V6 will have tri-bar pony logo on back and eco will just have a pony. Only V6s can not have any fog lights so that's also an easy way to tell

Yes and No ...

Base 050A V6 & 100A EB share the same 17" Wheels
Opt. 051A V6 18" 5-Spoke Foundry Wheels are also opt. on all EB (641)

Base EB:
EB Performance Pack 19" (67E) ... also EB Premium
EB Wheel & Stripe Pkg. 19" 10-Spoke (60W) ... also 2016 EB Premium
EB Int & Wheel Pkg (601 ... 2016 only) same wheel as above

Prem EB only:
18" 10-Spoke Magnetic Wheels as std. (same as GT)
19" 50th Anv. Pkg. Wheels (975) ... only 2015
20" 10-Spoke Foundry Wheels (649)
19" 10-spoke Pony Pkg. Polished Wheels (54P ... only 2016

So basically when comparing same model year, EB Base can have 2 wheels that the V6 can't have and EB Prem can have 3 others V6 can't have ... BUT the two possible V6 wheels are pretty common on EB.

On any EB, the easiest way to tell them apart is the deck lid emblem as EcoSwag1990 & Spartan already pointed out.

Of course with all the mods these cars receive, it may be easiest to look at the interior ... V6 has plain cloth seats, EB Base will have horizontal stitching (as Glen G pointed out). EB Base can also have cloth Recaros and Leather in the Premium along with all the other Premium features is a dead give-a-way.

Yup the easiest thing is check out the horse on the back. Very hard to tell the difference from the front.

Look at the back. Tribar with pony = V6, Just a pony = Ecoboost, GT = V8
