How many miles did you get out of your 10R80 transmission before self destructing? 500 miles, 1k, 2k… driving type? Towing, city, hwy, etc.

Hello; Keep on in your style. I like to have as much information as I can get on a topic. It is OK to be long winded.
OK, here’s my latest update as of Thursday, December 19, 2024.
my car has been at the dealer since November 19, 2024.
Early on, they did try putting a new throttlebody on it, but that did not fix the problems. They told me the damage was internal.

I contacted a lemon law firm that are located in California a friend of mine used. I then went and read the reviews online and they look to be not so great.
I did go to the dealership and spoke with the service manager Jose.
I also spoke with the transmission mechanic Tommy he seems like a really good guy.

So what I came away with was that they’ve had my car for a month.

1) They have not ordered the parts for my transmission yet and I was told even when they did, they would be the same parts! so not any kind of upgraded or updated or improved parts. I found this very disappointing.

2) I was told they will need my car for at least another month!

3) I’m in the process of trying to find a proper lawyer or law firm to represent me and my vehicle.

4). The videos they literally show some of the Ford upgraded updated parts so it does not make sense to me why they would not use those parts to rebuild my transmission.
Or give me a totally brand new transmission with all the upgrades.

In spite of trolls and maybe ford employees hiding in here.
They said negative things about me and that I would not get a new transmission or rebuild under warranty.
Due to my hard work and foundation, Ford finally put a new transmission in UNDER WARRANTY! LIKE THEY SHOULD HAVE!
They gave up on trying to rebuild it.
After almost 3 months of my car sitting outside in the hail, rain, snow, etc. at the Ford dealer.
Just hope it lasts a lot longer than transmission shops, performance shops and the Ford techs say it will last. Most say in 2 years the aftermarket will have all the multiple faulty parts figured out and upgraded.

If you read the notes it sounds like the dealer just reprogrammed it.
The dealer told me it was completely new and not rebuilt. I looked up the job numbers and they equal a new transmission.
DO NOT let trolls and manufacturers wear you down and into giving in/up!
Good driving to all!

Is it normal after having a new transmission install that there’s a very strong acrid smell coming from the vents, etc. even my buddy driving behind me said he could smell a very strong burning smell on the way home.
I don’t know if it was the clutches and the 10R80 automatic transmission burning, or what?
It didn’t seem like the normal oil burning smell like when you change your oil and you spill a little bit on the engine and then it burns off.

I don’t know for sure if the transmission was working properly due to very cold roads and all the salt and sand on them and the summer Performance tires.

Since my car had salt all over, I’ve left it parked outside in the snow. The worst thing you can do is leave your salt covered car in your warm garage so that it advances the corrosion.
Thank you.

Cold roads, salt and sand have zero to do with a transmission performance. Keep in mind, you have a new transmission so you have to go through the break-in period again. It will act funny until it “learns” again. It’s a learning/adaptive transmission, so its logic will somewhat update/fine tune as you drive more. Don’t beat on it when the trans fluid is cold, just drive normally until it warms up.

As to the smell, hard to say without actually smelling it. Again, it’s new so it will be burning off oils and such from the manufacturing process. If it persists after a few hundred miles, have the dealer look at it. These transmissions were notorious for coming from the factory low on oil, mine was a little over a quart low. Something to keep an eye on if the smells persist or if the performance is goofy after 500-1,000 miles.

I drive my car every day and it’s covered in salt currently and is always parked in the garage. New cars today are so much better protected against corrosion, don’t fret it.

Hello; In addition to the above let me add. I have replaced a few transmissions in my time. I get my greasy/oily hands on exhaust pipes and transmission cases. After the job often that grease/oil gets hot or burns off for a time.
Good luck.

I mentioned the cold roads and the stuff on the roads due to loss of traction, and that is why maybe the feel and sound, etc. I was experiencing was due to possibly losing traction and not the transmission.

Unfortunately, I won’t drive the car again until the snow and ice and salt on the roads is gone. So that could be a couple weeks or more, It’s looking like.
I have high-performance summer tires on the car, which do terrible in the cold in the snow.

Quick Question: Why wouldn't you just take the whip to a car wash which includes undercarriage spray? I understand you do not want the auto-carwash with brushes, but here we have sprayers which will spray your undercarriage for like $10

I may take my car to a car wash If It offers a good undercarriage clean, but what I’ve seen in videos, etc. is most of them either. Don’t have it at all or it’s very minimal. You really need to spray large volume of water underneath the whole car to wash all that salt out of every single crevice in corner and off every surface.
I’ve also thought about buying my own attachment like the one that Adam’s sells as a pressure washer attachment. It has to be low enough, to the ground that it will even go under my car. My car is lower to the ground than some.

The other thing is it doesn’t do any good if you go to the car wash with a super undercarriage cleaner. Then as soon as you leave the car wash and drive back into all the salt and crap all over the roads. It just defeats the whole cleaning you just did.
Good question though.

When I got my car back from the trans being built it smelled like I was riding a clutch pedal. It lasted about 100 miles.

I’ve driven my car for a couple hours another day and no acrid or abnormal smells! So all seems good for now.
