How long did you want a Mustang before you got one and what did it take to make it possible?

Didn't know I wanted one per say... Had a 67 Mustang way back in the day, followed by Camaros and Corvettes and had recently sold my Corvette and whilst my main drive car was in the workshop with stuffed turbo (BMW X5) I thought Id hire a car... Treated myself to 3 days with an S550 (and got a flat tire at night in peak traffic no less) and decided I had to have one.

Told the rental guy on return I was going to buy one and Im sure he was like yeah yeah, what everrrr...

Went to Ford Dealer and said I want to buy one, please see whats available new ( as NZ dealers dont sit on new stock at the yard, only 2nd hand ). Dealer never rang me back... Gave it a miss for a couple of weeks waiting... and then bought a 2020 else where in the country.

Rental was a 2019 Iconic 10 speed

I bought an Iconic 2020 10 speed

Photo of Rental
Photo of mine (which I promptly modified as I do all my cars)

Funny thing is I take it back to the dealer who snobbed me for servicing/mods and the Mustang salesperson doesnt make conversation or look at me at all lol...

Haha it’s actually a rental experience that got me to buy my current 2019. I vacation down in Palm Springs every year and last year I rented a white GT convert. I had so much fun driving that car that I decided I had to have one. This summer I found one in race red I couldn’t pass up!

After a 4 year battle with cancer I decided that I was going to get back in a car I always wanted. I used to buy and sell 89-97 thunderbird SC and LX cars. Loved them as they were fast for there time but they just should have had a supercharged v8. So one day I`m checking out Ebay and spot this 2015 Roush with a supercharger in my color black on black and I bought it online sight unseen. They did have a vid of the car driving and full inspection and with the protection plan from E-bay the car was better than expected. Here are just some of the birds I had.

I have wanted one for about 1.5 years now and have been slowly saving for a down payment. I had a 5 year plan to make it happen. I was holding out for a new GT. I have gotten tired of waiting so 3 weeks ago I started looking for a new higher paying job and am in the process of finalizing that switch now lol. I should be able to get it without feeling guilty in 18 months.
Did you ever get one?

Never really liked the styling or cheapness of the Stangs until this current generation, once I was in the market for a new car instantly knew I wanted one.

Never been much of a car guy, treating them as just people movers of utility. The thing the lit the 'car fuse' was the Protege5 I owned for a while. Looked at Mustangs off and on over the course of 25 years but they were such pieces of shit (drove like ass, interior was unmitigated crap) that I wrote them off till about 2017 when I came across some 2014 models that looked sorta ok. Still wasn't the least bit impressed with workmanship or materials but the pool of stick-shift rear drive cars was evaporating quickly. Plus my daily in rain or shine or snow was a fistful of motorcycles and no car can compete with a motorcycle in the joy of the ride.

But then I busted up my knee and had to take a break from 340day/yr motorcycle habit. And came across the S550 as well the new Challenger and for the first time the Mustang didn't look like a total piece of shit, in fact it was not half bad at all. Still obviously inferior to the Japanese and even Korean cars but I no longer was turned off.

So I bought three: a 2017 V6 which helped me understand V8 was the way to go, so got a GT and then 4 monthls later an EB so I could do a 1yr long ownership comparison. And I got a V8 Camaro for good measure. The V8 cars survived the culling from 4 new cars down to just 2.

Married into it @ 21, with an i6 '80 Capri. Promptly found a 289 to put in that car.

Since then, a '97, '05, and a '12 all Dailies and all V6's driven with the peddle on the floor everywhere they went.

The Capri was to be a Drag car and was well on it's way, then life happened.

I was never particularly interested in Mustangs until I saw one of the new S550s parked at a casino in 2015. It looked so exotic and refined that I thought it was some rich guy's expensive, high performance sportscar. Only when I saw the pony emblem on the front grill did I realize it was a Mustang. I instantly knew I had to have one right then and there.

Wow I love this thread. When I was about 10 years old, my mom had a 1974 Mustang notch back with a 4-speed. She would let me sit in the passenger seat and watch for her to push in the clutch, and I would shift for her. That was the start of my Mustang fanboyhood. When I got out of college in 1989 I moved to Cleveland and wanted a 5.0 LX fastback in the worst way. Loved the stealth look but had to buy an AWD car because of the winters. Fast forward to 2004. One of the best days of my life was driving from Pittsburgh to Akron with my Silverado and a trailer to buy a race red 1997 Cobra for $12,500, my first Mustang. I'll never forget the me-only test drive at a stoplight when a bunch of bikers pulled up next to me and gave the respect nod. Marriage and kids forced the sale of the 97, as well as the 99 and 03 Cobras. Bought my first brand new Mustang on June 28, 2018, at 50 years old, so a 40 year journey to the first new Mustang. Sometimes I just go out into the garage and look at it and say baby, you're beautiful.

I’ve always wanted one and I finally got it. Now the issue is I can’t stop modding it. Lol.

I generally enjoy most things with wheels, and many things without (boats, planes, etc). When it was time for a newer daily driver I ran the gamut of cars. The top ones that were in contention for a long time were Charger (392), Camaro SS, WRX, and 370Z. I started with the Charger, but at the time in 2015 I could not find a single dealer here in Colorado to order me a 392 Scat Pack. All of them had excess stock of SRT8s and were pushing them hard. But no matter how much I told them, look, I can't afford an SRT8, I want a Scat Pack, they would just give me the runaround. "Sure sure sure, let me get with our special order supervisor tomorrow and we'll do up some order forms and paperwork etc etc etc..." Tomorrow would come and no word, and I would call them back like, hey get those special order forms yet? And they all would say, "ahhh tsssssss soooo, it could take about 14 months to order a 392... BUT we have 5 SRT8s right here and I would LOVE to get you a great deal on one!". So I got fed up and gave up. I drove two 2015 Camaros, and long story short both had some glaring quality issues so I reluctantly moved on. Both the WRX and 370Z were eliminated after much debate with myself because they were just charging way too much money for cars on decade old platforms with decade old interiors. Saw the Mustang I have now online and went to go look at it. Loved the car and bought it.

By the time I was old enough to become interested in cars, the muscle car era was just ending but there were lots of 60s Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds, Vettes, Chevelle/Nova SS, GTOs, Chargers/Challengers, etc. on the road. My favorite was the '63 Vette but I preferred Mustangs over Camaros and Firebirds.

When the '70 Camaro came out I loved the look and much preferred Camaros and Firebirds of the 70s to the Mustang II. My favorite car of the 70s, though, was the Datsun 240Z. In 1978 my dad bought a '66 Mustang 289, which rekindled my fondness of 60s era Mustangs.

Throughout the 80s and 90s I had little use for Mustangs. When I rode in foxbodies or SN95s of friends/co-workers, the impression was primitive buckets of bolts. My brother had a 90s era Camaro that while not great seemed well ahead of the Mustangs in refinement. I bought a Volkswagen GTI in '85, which was a fun car. After we started raising a family our vehicles became devoted first and foremost in the 90s and later to family hauling.

When the '05 Mustang came out I loved the retro styling. I test drove one in '08 and thought it was decent but ended up buying a Fusion because I had 2 teenagers that needed the back seat. I became resigned to the idea of only buying vehicles for practical reasons.

Two years ago we had a life changing event, losing our son at the age of 27. Among other things it was a wake-up call about mortality and what you want out of life. I decided live it. Have fun! I'm getting a damn Mustang! Initially I thought I would look at 13-14 S197s because I preferred the exterior styling. However, it soon became obvious the S550 is a better car all around. Loved my '15 and now love my '19! Modding is a blast, too.

Always wanted a sports car with a lot of power, ever since I was old enough to drive. In my 40’s now and finally able to afford one. But never really wanted a Mustang until the S550 came out.
