I feel like a dealer shouldn't have a problem with you wanting to do this. You're buying the car its your money on the line as long as what youre doing to the vehicle doesn't harm it then why not...

The point is, the dealer would have absolutely no recourse if you did harm the vehicle.

Let's say the dealer allows you to plug your laptop in, and run your scan, which you are 100% sure is harmless. Then, afterwards, the dealer claims whatever you did caused an issue with the car, and wants you to pay to have it fixed. Are you going to simply agree, and pay, or are you going to argue? Of course, you know you're in the right, right? So, you're going to say "I didn't cause it. Not my problem"

So, the smart thing for a dealer, or any seller, to do is to not let you scan the vehicle in the first place.

As others have said, just ask the dealer to do it.

Here she is! CPO 2019 7.2k miles, 401a + active exhaust+ performance package. It was an employees car so I got to talk to them and get full history of modifications (basically none) and service history done in-store

I'd not try this move till you are at the point of serous buyer. then ask if you can check if it has been reflashed or whatever you want the history of.
Most will see this as a person that wants to make a ghost key or worse.
So till you are about to drop money on a unit. I'd skip this.

I do want to rain on your parade but I had a 2019 PP2 low miles lined up at a dealer, CPO... and I found out it had mod s and was returned to OEM. They should t be able to sell it as CPO but they did, jus not to me. Buyer beware.

Not casting aspersions on any particular dealers BUT some don't do all the checks and corrections required by whoever says its certified. The certifying companies/manufacturers typically trust the dealer unless/until a history of statistically too many problems after sale. Similar thing with extended warrantees, even some new car dealers don't always submit the paperwork and just pocket the money because many people never have a claim or sell the car during factory warranty and not transfer. If there is a claim, they hope the buyer comes back to them and they can still be ahead overall if they repair on their dime. ALWAYS call the warranty company and confirm your policy.

When I go shopping soon, I want to bring my laptop with my diagnostic cables and programs just to see the history and stats, is that weird? Besides physical inspection and test driving, I want to deep dive into the PCM. I imagine the salesperson will be weirded out a bit lol. That being said, is that too much?
Forget it pal ain"t gonna happen, and you really should know the why.

The only deep dive you'll get is in a very shallow puddle.

I checked it thoroughly, I've done enough mods between a v6 and v8 to be able to tell if it was put back to stock haha
