Have any of you taken your car in for an oil change yet? If so, what did it set you back?

My differential leak is getting addressed tomorrow and I was thinking of having them change the oil while they had it, car has almost 1900 miles and I like to change early on the first oil change.

Id think asking the dealership that will be changing the oil would be the way to go.
The obvious answer.

I did that, but they were unsure as they had never done it at this particular dealership before. The technician that is working on the car came from a larger dealer and is Shelby certified, but the service desk seemed to be unfamiliar with these cars.

$180-200 is right; 11.5 quarts of 50w kicks the price. You do want to make sure that whomever is touching your car is qualified otherwise they could make a mess of your undercarriage when changing the filter.

i looked into a premium maintenance plan from Flood Ford, but im not sure i will drive the vehicle enough for it to be worth it. it covers oil changes, trans fluid checks and top offs at 20k, brake pads. there may be a few more things, but im not sure ill drive the car enough to make the plan worth it. ill be probably only putting 3-4k on the car per year so its only one oil change a year.

Yeah, the almost 12 quarts of oil itself is 1/2 the cost.

Buy the oil and filter and do it yourself. I have read so many horror stories about dealership oil changes
While I don't have a problem doing it myself, they already had the car in the air anyway, and I was standing beside the tech the entire time, he did it by the book.

Outside of the oil and filer, Ford is only charging $13 to perform the oil change. Well worth it if you trust your mechanic and in my case you're there with him anyway.

No offense, just sayin.... I've read countless stories of botched oil changes at dealerships.

No worries man, none taken. You're absolutely right, and in most cases is more than solid advice.

One last bit of advice. Verify the type and quantity of oil they used, and then verify the torque on the filter canister. If you do all that, it doesn't matter who does it.

You don't think the dealer is paying retail for materials do you?

Their cost on oil and filters is probably half (or better) than what a retail consumer pays. Even retail buyers can get much better pricing if you're able to buy large quantities. But who wants to buy oil by the drum or pallet?

I'm not above paying someone else premium prices for valuable service, but between the horror stories and me just wanting to get under the car and get an update for what's going on, I prefer to change fluids myself. With spent lubricant drop-off locations it's really not that big of a hassle.

I'm fact, if you consider the time it takes driving to and from wherever you'd have it changed, you're at the very least not saving as much time as you'd think. If you're not able to so something productive while you wait, it's almost certainly costing you more time (and money) to have someone else do it.
