That would be an awesome matchup. I assume the Z would be lighter than the 500, so it’ll have an advantage there. In a straight line the power of the 500 would take over (especially if it’s DCT vs manual trans), but on a track it might be a different story. That Alpha chassis is no joke and in general the Camaro suspension is much better than the Mustang. The 500 suspension is much better than the standard Mustang suspension for sure, but assuming GM tunes the suspension at the ZL1 level (or perhaps even better), edge probably goes to the Z. As the article mentions, let’s see if GM actually builds it. I have my doubts…

I had to google LT6. These alphanumeric codes for engines are irritating.

I'd be interested in a Camaro with the Z06 engine if they put a manual transmission in the car. No automatics for me.

If you want an automatic, why not just buy the Corvette? The 'vette will be significantly quicker and faster than a front engine RWD setup in a Camaro.

Vs. the GT500, the GT500 would probably be faster than the Camaro unless GM goes with really sticky tires and very stiff suspension like the ZL1 1LE had.

Historically, the Z28 has been a manual. Can’t imagine it would be any different this time around

First off, I don’t think a Z28 will happen. But just to throw out a few thoughts if it did: A ZL1 1LE M6 weighs 3,840 lbs with a full tank of fuel and a backseat. GT500 CFTP is 4,060 lbs with no backseat, CF wheels, and a smaller fuel tank. A Z28 with an LT6 would likely weigh around 3,720 lbs not including any other weight reduction GM decides to do (e.g., lightweight glass, CF hood/roof, etc.), and could probably get it down to under 3,700 lbs with a better front:rear weight distribution than ZLE (which already has a slightly better f:r weight distribution than the GT500). For comparison a Camaro SS 1LE weighs ~3,750 lbs but doesn’t have spool valve dampers, which are lighter than the Magnetic dampers.

The ZLE is already about as quick as a CFTP around a track, so subtract 130 to 150 lbs, with a similar wheel/tire/suspension setup and similar power, and there’s no reason why a Z28 with LT6 wouldn’t be even faster. Perhaps they could even increase downforce with some clever engineering without increasing drag, further improving track performance. Nissan has done this over the years with the GT-R.
An 8,600 rpm V8 in a Z28 would be a huge selling point for a lot of people.

But yet the GT500 is faster. By a lot. Yes it's heavier by an entire person's worth of weight, but the extra 110 HP easily offsets it.

The LT6 is going to be a lot heavier than whatever the stupid name is for the pushrod V8 in the Camaro SS 1LE. It has dual overhead cams and huge heads. It's also going to require more cooling because it makes a lot more power.

The Z51 Corvette dry weight is 3647 lbs according to C&D.
The Z06 Corvette is 3774 lbs (Motor Trend).

That comparison will give you some idea.

The Z06 makes 670 HP. The GT500 makes 760 HP. That's NOT similar HP. That's a big difference. And I would assume that with a supercharger, the GT500 Predator engine (cool name, BTW) will out torque the Z06 engine at every point through the rev band.

I would assume so as well. I was responding to the OP saying he wanted it with an A10, which I believe means automatic.

Even if a Camaro with the Z06 engine wouldn't be faster than a GT500, I'd still want one. I think that engine is really good. I really hope GM builds that car.

If they make the Z28 I’ll shit myself. The ZL1 should’ve been a Z28 the entire time anyway.

A CFTP is barely faster around a track than a ZLE, that's what we're talking about. Not higher speed acceleration which the GT500 wins handily. But, an A10 version of a 3,700 lbs Z28 with 650-670 hp would be very close in a straight line to a GT500 up to 130 mph when the extra power of the GT500 would give it an advantage.

Nope. The LT6 is only 2 lbs heavier than the LT2, which is an evolved LT1 (the engine in the SS 1LE). I don't know how much heavier the LT2 is than the LT1, but they can't be that far off. And Car and Driver doesn't publish dry weight - they publish wet weight with a full tank of fuel. A Z28 M6 with an LT6 would be lighter than the LT4 supercharged powered 3,840 lbs ZLE M6.

The Z06 makes 670 HP. The GT500 makes 760 HP. That's NOT similar HP. That's a big difference. And I would assume that with a supercharger, the GT500 Predator engine (cool name, BTW) will out torque the Z06 engine at every point through the rev band.
I was referring to the ZLE, not the GT500. A Z28 with 130-150 less pounds and similar suspension and power to a ZLE would be quicker around a track, which would make it likely faster than a GT500 CFTP around a track. Gearing would make up for the lack of torque. The Z06 is plenty quick around a track with only 460 ft-lbs of torque.

Even if a Camaro with the Z06 engine wouldn't be faster than a GT500, I'd still want one. I think that engine is really good. I really hope GM builds that car.
Yes, me too.

I had a ZL1 with a magnuson blower and personally I'd be in for a GT500. Seems less sharp and more street car than the ZL1. I cant imagine a 24 Z28.

10 Speed ZL1s only trap 124-125 mph, GT500's are 132+. Add a mph for the 150 LB weight loss on the Z/28, 125-126 compared to 132+ traps aren't that close. (And the 132 trap was a non CFTP car)

I think you're cherry-picking data a little bit. Most ZL1s trap about 125 mph, but I don't think most GT500s trap 132+ mph. Now I'm going off of memory here, but from what I can recall most GT500s are in the 129+/- mph range. There's several stock ZL1s in the 128-129 mph range on Camaro6 fast list, and from what I recall, the fastest GT500s are about 132 mph. I can't recall if there was a stock one that hit 133 mph. That said, looking at average runs or top runs, there's about a 4 mph difference. Nothing a few minor bolt ons won't significantly close the gap to (or a 150 lbs weight reduction and 20 more hp like an LT6 powered Z28). ZLEs are about 1 mph slower than ZL1s so that increases the gap a little to the GT500. ZLEs are a little lighter than a ZL1 but have more drag due to the aero and fatter tires.

That said, a Z28 with the LT6 weighing ~3,700 lbs with the same downforce but slightly reduced drag than a ZLE would be an amazing car on the track. It wouldn't trap 132 mph at the strip, but I'd be willing to bet if it had 670 hp and 3,700 lbs and slightly reduced drag from a ZLE, it could trap nearly 130 mph, with most probably in the 127-128 mph range.

Just went with car and drivers posted times lol, ZL1 10 speed was 124 mph, base GT500 was 132 mph.

This isn't a passing match between the ZL1 and GT500, we all know that the 500 is the superior of the two. I also don't think that a manual Z28 would better a CFTP, but a auto likely will. No way it comes in under 3800 lbs though.

Prolly better it on a track, for straight line speed though, no.

I have a feeling as in times past….the Camaro with 650 NA Hp and it might get a Dtc will be an absolute animal on a track.
